Under the photovoltaic panels along the Caspian Sea coast, a new cooperation agreement has just been signed. The handshake between Masdar, a renewable energy developer from the United Arab Emirates, and Azerbaijan's green energy company has opened a new page for the traditional oil and gas country's green power transformation. Extending outward from the already put into operation Garadagh photovoltaic power station, a larger scale integrated layout of wind, solar and energy storage is accelerating on the land of Azerbaijan.

Expansion and acceleration of existing projects

According to the newly signed cooperation agreement, Masdar will expand the 230MW Garadagh photovoltaic power station that has already been put into operation, with an additional installed capacity of no less than 350MW, and synchronously build a battery energy storage system with a maximum capacity of 200MWh. After the expansion is completed, the total installed capacity of the project will exceed 580MW, becoming one of the largest foreign-funded centralized photovoltaic power stations in Azerbaijan.

The Neftchala 315MW photovoltaic power station, jointly developed by Masdar and SOCAR Green, has officially completed financing closure and is supported by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Asian Development Bank. After completion, the project can generate 686 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually, reducing about 280000 tons of carbon emissions and providing stable green electricity for 140000 households in the area.

24/7 green power pilot launched

Both parties will also jointly evaluate the 100MW all-weather renewable energy project located in Nakhchivan. The project will directly reuse Masdar's mature technology experience of 5.2GW photovoltaic and 19GWh energy storage installed in Abu Dhabi, and achieve 24-hour stable output of green electricity through high proportion energy storage coordination scheduling, filling the gap in Azerbaijan's continuous and stable green electricity supply.

As of September 2026, Azerbaijan's grid connected new energy installed capacity has exceeded 1.2GW, and Masdar's cumulative layout of photovoltaic projects in the local area has exceeded 1GW, accounting for more than 80% of the country's total new energy grid connected capacity.

The wind of the Caspian Sea also blows through photovoltaic arrays, and Masdar's project is building a solid green energy backbone for Azerbaijan on the path of transitioning from a traditional oil and gas exporting country to a green power exporting country.Editor/Cheng Liting
