Moroccan green energy company OCP Green Energy has officially connected the country's first large-scale lithium iron phosphate battery energy storage system to the Bengali mining area, with core energy storage equipment provided by Chinese company Envision Energy. The project has an installed capacity of 25MW/125MWh and an investment of approximately 17 million US dollars, equivalent to approximately 170 million Moroccan dirhams. It is a supporting energy storage project for OCP Green Energy's 202MW photovoltaic project. The project forms a complete closed loop of photovoltaic power generation, energy storage regulation, and industrial consumption, providing 5-hour power storage and helping the mining area reduce peak electricity bills by about 25%. From the 25MW/125MWh in the Bengali mining area, to the 1300MWh optical storage project in Midert, and to the 12GWh energy storage tender in Saudi Arabia, Chinese energy storage companies are accelerating their layout in industrial scenarios in North Africa and the Middle East.

Charge and discharge daily to reduce costs and increase efficiency

The project is located in the Bengali phosphate mining area under the OCP Group in Morocco. It adopts lithium iron phosphate battery energy storage technology, with a power of 25MW and a total capacity of 125MWh, providing 5 hours of power storage. In terms of operation mode, the energy storage system transfers the surplus electricity of the photovoltaic power station during the day to the peak period of industrial electricity consumption for release, which can achieve one charge and one discharge per day. This mode directly helps the industrial facilities in the mining area to reduce the electricity charge by about 25% in peak hours, and ensure the stable power consumption of phosphate mining and processing equipment. In terms of technology route selection, lithium iron phosphate batteries have become the mainstream choice for large-scale energy storage projects worldwide due to their high safety, long cycle life, and good thermal stability. The Moroccan OCP Group is building an integrated ecosystem for lithium-ion batteries based on lithium iron phosphate technology, and this project is a key implementation of this strategy.

Equipment provided by Chinese enterprises and independently integrated by Mofang

The division of labor in this project is worth paying attention to. Envision Energy provides core energy storage equipment, while the civil engineering, electrical integration, and project management work are all independently completed by the Moroccan side. This division of labor indicates that OCP Green Energy Company has certain localization capabilities in the engineering execution of energy storage projects, and the role of Chinese enterprises is focused on core equipment supply and technical support. According to public reports, Envision Energy signed the project at the end of 2025 and quickly completed equipment delivery and grid connection, demonstrating its delivery efficiency in the field of energy storage system integration. OCP Green Energy Company is a green energy subsidiary of the Moroccan Phosphate Group, which is the world's largest phosphate exporter. In recent years, OCP has been continuously promoting the green transformation of industrial energy use. Its 202MW photovoltaic power station in the Bengali mining area provides upstream power sources for energy storage systems. Keywords: New Energy News Network, Energy Storage, International

Moroccan energy storage track heats up

Envision Energy's Morocco project is not an isolated incident. In September 2026, the Moroccan energy storage market will continue to see important milestones with the participation of multiple Chinese enterprises. On August 27, 2026, China Energy Construction Co., Ltd. signed the EPC contract for the Midert Phase I photovoltaic storage project in Morocco, constructing approximately 630MW of photovoltaic power plants and 1300MWh of electrochemical energy storage systems. After completion, it will become the largest integrated photovoltaic storage project in Africa. Envision Energy itself continues to expand in the Central and East African markets, and has been shortlisted for the preliminary review of 3GW/12GWh independent energy storage projects in Saudi Arabia. Six Chinese companies, including China Power Construction, Southern Power Grid, and Guoxuan High Tech, have also been shortlisted during the same period. In Egypt, the main control building of the Neferti 500MW/1050MWh independent energy storage power station constructed by China Energy Engineering Corporation has been topped out on September 12, 2026, making it the largest independent energy storage power station project under construction in Africa. At a broader policy level, Morocco has proposed to increase the proportion of renewable energy generation to 52% by 2030, and energy storage systems, as a key supporting solution to address the intermittency of photovoltaic power generation, are entering a period of centralized deployment.Editor/Gao Xue
