The Kandal Stueng substation in Dakmao, Kandal Province, Cambodia, has just completed a limit test for a 215.6MWh energy storage power station - waking up the entire power station from zero voltage state, supporting the restoration of 240 kilometers of transmission lines and 5 substations, assisting in the start-up and grid connection of a 60MW hydropower station, and subsequently achieving three source joint operation with a 135MW thermal power plant. This is a 108.4MW/215.6MWh grid type energy storage project developed by Sunshine Power for EDC, a state-owned power enterprise in Cambodia. It will be connected to the grid and undergo full acceptance testing on September 30, 2026.

Black start verification of network hardware strength

The project has configured 516 networked PCS devices and completed the complete black start verification of the entire station from zero voltage startup. During the testing process, the system smoothly withstood 5 transformer excitation shocks, with a maximum capacity of 100MVA; Maintain synchronous operation even under conditions with a maximum phase difference of 15 ° between different power sources. In islanding mode, the power station operates independently for 3.5 hours, completing three grid connected and islanding mode switches. The voltage deviation is controlled within 2%, and the frequency fluctuation does not exceed 0.15Hz. The entire set of tests covers the core performance indicators of grid type energy storage in weak and passive power grid scenarios, verifying its stable support capability under extreme working conditions.

Debugging completed after 20 days of high temperature during the rainy season

The project was launched during the rainy season in Cambodia, with the highest ambient temperature on site reaching 40 ℃. The on-site team of Sunshine Power completed debugging and three rounds of performance testing within 20 days under high temperature and high humidity conditions, ensuring the project is connected to the grid as scheduled. The project is located at the core node of the central power grid in Cambodia, and is also an important channel for cross-border power transmission from Vietnam to Cambodia, providing security support for the power grid. After the project is connected to the grid, it will form a multi energy complementary pattern with surrounding hydropower and thermal power, enhance the active support capacity of regional power grid frequency and voltage, and alleviate the fluctuation pressure of cross-border transmission channels. Accelerating regional layout for energy storage going global

Currently, about 63% of Cambodia's electricity comes from renewable energy sources such as hydropower, and the goal is to increase the proportion of renewable energy installed capacity to 70% by 2030. Grid based energy storage is accelerating its implementation locally: in March 2026, the country's first 500MW/1000MWh grid based energy storage will be put into commercial operation, and the Asian Development Bank has also approved $63.44 million in financing to support the Takeo substation 250MW/500MWh grid based energy storage project, serving cross-border electricity trade in the ASEAN power grid. Sunshine Power's energy storage shipment volume reached 25GWh in the first half of 2026, and the revenue of the energy storage sector exceeded that of the photovoltaic inverter business for the first time. The company predicts that the growth rate of the European energy storage market will exceed 50% next year, and its business layout in the US market will be contracted due to the impact of new equipment import regulations.Editor/Gao Xue
