The autumn sunshine in the inland of Southeast Europe is shining on the surface of the photovoltaic power station that has been in operation for five years in the Kululani district of Moldova.

Four photovoltaic energy storage projects are rapidly advancing

The new photovoltaic energy storage project will cover four districts: Klelahi, Chimishlia, Yaloveni, and Nisporeni. The estimated investment for a single Klelahi project is about 10.86 million euros, all of which will be supported by the Chinese government's free financial assistance. The project is synchronized with a battery energy storage system, which is no longer simply a photovoltaic power generation facility, but directly targets the long-term lack of power regulation capacity in the Moldovan power grid, helping to stabilize green power output fluctuations and improve power supply stability during extreme periods.

The project is progressing at a clear and tight pace. In May 2026, China and Morocco completed an exchange of documents and officially launched the feasibility study. In June, officials from Morocco and China held talks in Beijing to finalize the project promotion framework. In July, a Chinese preparatory technical inspection team went to Morocco to coordinate with various departments. In August, a joint delegation went to the Klelahi District to conduct a site survey. Currently, the technical evaluation and scheme refinement work are still ongoing. As of April 2026, the installed capacity of renewable energy in Moldova has reached 1023 megawatts, covering 25% of the country's electricity consumption. After the landing of four new power stations, this proportion will be further increased.

Energy cooperation extends bilateral economic and trade ties

The Kelulani District Photovoltaic Power Station, which was previously built with Chinese assistance, was put into operation in October 2021. It covers an area of about 8 hectares and has a stable annual power generation of 2.86 million kilowatt hours, continuously ensuring the daily electricity supply for local schools, hospitals, and more than 3000 households. The surplus electricity can be exported to the European Union, and all the electricity generated will be invested in local education, healthcare, and public services. The successful operation of Moldova's first solar power plant has laid a solid foundation for public trust and engineering implementation of four new projects in the future. The current bilateral economic and trade interaction between China and Moldova is rapidly heating up. The intergovernmental economic and trade cooperation committee meeting, which was interrupted for ten years, is preparing to restart. Moldova is also participating in the China International Import Expo for the first time in the form of a national pavilion. The photovoltaic energy storage project is no longer a single energy aid project. It will form a linkage with cooperation in intelligent transportation, agricultural product processing, infrastructure and other fields, providing practical support for Moldova to solve its energy dilemma and integrate into the regional green power network. It will also open up new entry points for long-term economic and trade exchanges between the two countries.Editor/Cheng Liting
