The small town of Tyuwa in western Finland is about 370 kilometers northwest of Helsinki. The terrain here is open and the wind farms are scattered, and the wind turbine blades are not stopped all year round. Nowadays, a new type of neighbor has emerged next to the wind turbine - rows of pre installed energy storage cabinets are gradually being installed with the arrival of construction machinery. The Carpio battery energy storage project, led by Swiss energy storage developer Delta Capacity, has officially started construction with a scale of 125 MW/300 MWh. This is the second large-scale energy storage project that the company has landed in Finland, and it has once again engraved the name of a Chinese energy storage company on the map of the Nordic power grid.

Two power stations start construction simultaneously

The Capio project is jointly developed by Delta Capacity and the Streega Family Foundation, and is planned to be connected to the grid and put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2027. After production, Delta Capacity will undertake long-term asset management. The core participating parties of the project have all been finalized: Sunac Power will provide energy storage battery equipment, NEPower, a Nordic electrification professional enterprise, will serve as the BoP general contractor for the power station, responsible for on-site electrification construction and substation construction, and Despro, a local engineering enterprise in Finland, will provide localized technical support as a local partner.

Along with Kapio, there is also the AKKU One project being promoted. The two have exactly the same scale, both at 125 MW/300 MWh, totaling 600 MWh. AKKU One is located in Lapin Lahti, about 450 kilometers northeast of Helsinki, and is a mature project under construction acquired by Delta Capacity. Sungrow also provides energy storage system technology.

The Chinese system is the backbone

The equipment supply for the two projects comes from the 1GWh energy storage framework agreement previously signed between Sungrow and Delta Capacity. The agreement was signed during the London Energy Storage Summit, stipulating that Sunac Power will provide the PowerTitan 2.0 liquid cooled energy storage system.

PowerTitan 2.0 is the world's first 10MWh fully liquid cooled energy storage system, pioneering the integration of AC and DC structures, with battery cells and PCS integrated into one cabinet. The integrated design eliminates the need for external PCS and DC combiner equipment in terms of land occupation and maintenance space, saving 29% of land occupation; The architecture of one cluster, one PCS eliminates the inter cluster barrel effect and increases the total life cycle discharge by 8%; Fully liquid cooled heat dissipation combined with AI inspired thermal balance reduces auxiliary power consumption by 45%. Pre installation and pre commissioning are completed before leaving the factory, eliminating the need for PCS installation, DC wiring, communication testing, and charge discharge testing on site, truly achieving grid connection upon arrival. For Nordic countries with short construction windows, high labor costs, and long winters, integrated AC/DC pre installation design directly reduces project investment and operation costs. Prior to this, Finland's first Kalanti 50MW/100MWh project using PowerTitan 2.0 had already been implemented, accumulating local experience for this large-scale supply.

From building power plants to selling electricity

Kapio has adopted a different operational mechanism from AKKU One in its business model. Delta Capacity has signed a partial capacity custody agreement with Centrica Energy to optimize the scheduling and trading of energy storage assets in the Nordic unified electricity market. The separation of power station construction and electricity sales into two companies reflects a change in the commercial logic of energy storage: the value of a power station is increasingly determined not by how many watt hours it has installed, but by how it is dispatched into the electricity market.

The revenue structure of Nordic energy storage is shifting from a single frequency regulation to a diversified model driven by the synergy of electricity wholesale and balanced services, with the revenue from artificial frequency recovery reserve (mFRR) being particularly prominent. In Finland, the rapid expansion of wind power installed capacity has brought about insufficient grid inertia and electricity price fluctuations, which is where flexibility resources come into play. Industry forecasts show that the Nordic energy storage market will deploy over 4GW/10GWh by 2030; Finland has already put into operation its battery energy storage installed capacity, which is currently only about 250MW, with considerable growth potential.

Patrik Hes, founder and CEO of Delta Capacity, stated that the two projects demonstrate that large-scale energy storage can be implemented with high standards and efficiency through local and international partners. The total capacity of 600MWh is an important milestone in the long-term cooperation between the two parties. James Li, Vice President of Energy Storage and Director of Energy Storage Business at Sungrow Europe, stated that this collaboration combines mature PowerTitan 2.0 technology with Delta Capacity's project execution capabilities to jointly deliver high reliability energy storage assets.

Delta Capacity, headquartered in Switzerland, was founded in 2022 and focuses on the development, acquisition, and long-term operation of large-scale energy storage projects in Europe. It plans to build and operate over 6GWh of flexible energy storage assets by 2030. For Sungrow, overseas markets are also the main engine of growth: in 2025, the company's energy storage system will ship 43GWh globally, of which 36GWh will be shipped overseas, a year-on-year increase of about 90%. The energy storage business has surpassed inverters for the first time to become the largest source of revenue, and its market share in Europe ranks among the top. 600MWh, Just the starting point of this Nordic route.Editor/Yang Meiling
