On October 8, 2026, news came from State Grid Fujian Electric Power Co., Ltd. that the world's first Xiamen ± 320 kV flexible DC transmission technology demonstration project using true bipolar connection scheme had transmitted over 20 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, equivalent to the total annual electricity consumption of more than 5 million households. This demonstration project, which has been running smoothly for nearly 11 years, has delivered a heavy performance report.

Technological breakthroughs achieve full chain autonomous controllability

The Xiamen Flexible DC Project is a major technology demonstration project of State Grid Corporation of China. It was officially put into operation in December 2015, and at that time, its voltage level and transmission capacity ranked first in the world for flexible DC transmission systems, breaking the long-term technological monopoly of overseas enterprises in this field.

The core technology of the project won the second prize in the selection of the the State Technological Innovation Award in 2023. Three technological achievements were selected as the first set of major technical equipment in the energy field, which completely helped China to achieve the autonomous control of the full set of key technologies of high-voltage and high-capacity flexible DC transmission. As of the end of September 2026, the relevant technical solutions incubated by this project have been implemented and applied in more than 12 large-scale flexible straight projects in China, and the spillover effects of technology continue to be released.

The urban power supply support capacity continues to refresh

As the fourth power supply channel in Xiamen Island, the Xiamen Flexible DC Project has added 1 million kilowatts of power supply capacity, equivalent to building a million kilowatt pollution-free power plant in the core area of the city, accurately matching the high reliability electricity demand of high-end emerging industries such as integrated circuits and data centers in Xiamen.

During the peak summer season of 2026, the monthly power transmission of the project reached a historic high since its commissioning, and its proportion in the power supply structure of Xiamen Island continued to increase. From January to September 2026, the cumulative power transmission of the project increased by 14.7% year-on-year compared to the same period in 2025, maintaining a stable operation state of zero unplanned shutdowns and providing continuous and reliable power support for energy interconnection and local economic and social development inside and outside Xiamen Island.
