In the early morning, the construction enclosure outside Guangzhou East Station just became lively. A worker climbed over the fence and entered the work area, but the chin strap of the safety helmet was not securely fastened. A few seconds later, this scene appeared on the large screen of the Shipai Safety Production Command Center: AI automatically framed the problem location, captured the evidence screen, matched the judgment criteria, and a warning message was synchronously pushed to the on-site construction worker's phone. From discovery to response, the entire process takes less than one minute. This is not a drill, but a daily occurrence at the site of the Guangzhou East Station renovation and the Guangzhou East to Xintang Fifth and Sixth Line project.

An AI expert team has arrived at the construction site

The operation points of the Guangxin Fifth and Sixth Line project are scattered, the site changes quickly, and the risk control is difficult. Among them, it runs parallel to the existing Guangshen Railway for 28.5 kilometers and crosses 1.5 kilometers, resulting in extremely high construction safety risks. The traditional way of relying on people to run on-site and experience to identify hidden dangers is becoming increasingly difficult to match the intensity of such construction.

To this end, China Railway Guangzhou Bureau takes the lead in guiding the Guangzhou Engineering Construction Command, in conjunction with Tsinghua Pearl River Delta Research Institute and Beiyang Company, to integrate AI technology, railway safety standards, and years of accumulated management experience to create the first railway engineering intelligent control platform in the entire railway line, and to be the first to land and put into use on the Guangxin Fifth and Sixth Lines. Simply put, it is equivalent to equipping the construction site with an intelligent brain and an AI expert team - relying on the foundation protection model and professional intelligent agents, built according to an intelligent base, a comprehensive portal, seven major professional modules, and three types of coordination mechanisms. The seven major modules cover video risk source identification, security penetration management, intrusion control, digital shield tunneling, deformation and stress monitoring, total factor analysis and intelligent agent array, covering the core links of railway construction safety management.

Hidden dangers cannot escape AI eyes

The eyes of the platform come from the cameras already installed on the construction site and the on-site photos taken casually. Based on the 11 first level classifications, 234 inspection objects, and 1412 hidden danger conditions previously organized by China Railway Guangzhou Bureau, it can automatically identify risks such as personnel protection, edge protection, mechanical operation, and temporary electricity use, and indicate their locations, retain evidence, and provide judgment criteria, so that hidden dangers are no longer hidden in blind spots.

The platform also carries out special control measures for key risks such as business line construction, shield tunneling, deformation and stress changes, forming a standardized closed loop of detection, reminder, suspension, confirmation, and recovery. At the same time, it has opened up multiple data channels such as video surveillance, professional monitoring, and construction organization, achieving data aggregation and correlation analysis, turning scattered information into measurable and traceable decision-making basis.

AI leads to personnel to check

Wisdom does not equate to substitution. The platform adheres to human-machine collaboration and clear rights and responsibilities: AI is responsible for providing clues and evidence, while key processes such as confirming the nature and level of hidden dangers, making decisions on resuming work, and conducting rectification inspections are still handled by responsible personnel with corresponding authority in accordance with regulations. The verified clues are included in hazard management, associated with responsible units, rectification requirements, and disposal records, supporting comparison and manual review before and after rectification, which not only improves efficiency but also maintains responsibility boundaries.

On this basis, a joint dispatch and command mechanism has also been established. Each construction unit appoints dispatchers to enter the Shipai Safety Production Command Center, jointly duty and dispatch with the Guangzhou Engineering Construction Command Center, and relies on the platform to carry out daily control, promote information to the front line and instructions to the site, and achieve risk prevention, resource sharing, and coordinated disposal. According to Zhu Yi, director of the Engineering Dispatch Office (Information Office) of the Guangzhou Engineering Construction Command, this mechanism has shortened and accelerated the originally layered information chain.

On October 18th, China Railway Guangzhou Bureau organized more than 100 industry leaders, technical experts, and professional management personnel from the railway construction system to gather at the Shipai Safety Production Command Center to observe and exchange the achievements and application results of the platform construction on site, providing a sample for the safety management of railway engineering construction nationwide that can be observed, exchanged, and promoted.

Next, China Railway Guangzhou Bureau will focus on optimizing platform functions, improving operational mechanisms, strengthening talent cultivation, and gradually promoting mature applications to more new railway projects, promoting the platform from a test field to a responsibility field, and continuously empowering high-quality development of railway construction with digitalization.Editor/Yang Meiling
