Recently, representatives from China Southern Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines signed a code sharing cooperation agreement in Addis Ababa. On this day, China Southern Airlines launched a new intercontinental route from Guangzhou to Changsha to Addis Ababa. Taking the new route as an opportunity, both sides deeply linked the Guangzhou hub and Addis Ababa hub, creating a more convenient air channel for cross-border travel between China and Africa.

Implementation of Code Sharing Agreement
This cooperation is further implemented and deepened on the basis of the memorandum of understanding reached by both parties in 2025. According to the agreement, both parties will engage in deep cooperation in direct flights between China and Ethiopia, as well as in the extended aviation market, relying on each other's hub resources to expand the two-way route network, enrich passenger travel choices, and optimize transit connection services. Xiao Yong, deputy director of the Marketing Committee of China Southern Airlines, said that this cooperation is an important practice for China Southern Airlines to deepen China Africa aviation cooperation based on the the Belt and Road initiative. Daniel Abebe, Vice President of Strategic Planning and Alliance at Ethiopian Airlines, stated that this milestone cooperation will strengthen the air link between Asia and Africa.

China Southern Airlines expands its network in Africa
After the cooperation is implemented, China Southern Airlines will carry out code sharing on three direct flights operated by Ethiopian Airlines, from Addis Ababa to Guangzhou, Shanghai Pudong, and Chengdu Tianfu. After arriving in Addis Ababa, passengers can conveniently transfer to 28 African destinations including Dar es Salaam, Conakry, Lusaka, Entebbe, Harare, etc., further expanding the regional route layout of China Southern Airlines in Africa. This arrangement enables China Southern Airlines to leverage Ethiopian Airlines' hub network in Africa, extending its route reach to more African cities and providing more travel options for China Africa economic and trade exchanges and personnel exchanges.
