In the early morning, the work area on the north bank of Qianwan Port is enveloped in a salty sea breeze. On berth 76, a 200000 ton bulk cargo ship has just secured its ropes. During the lifting and lowering of the grab bucket, the ore needs to be transported to the rear yard through a long belt conveyor. Over the years, there have been many transfer links and insufficient connections from the ship's edge to the yard, resulting in long queues when shipping schedules are tight. Changes began to occur this autumn - the supporting project of Qingdao Port Qianwan Port Dry Bulk Terminal (Phase I) and the continuation project of Qingdao Yangfan Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.'s 2 # outfitting terminal have recently started construction.

Old yard welcomes new upgrade

The supporting project of Qianwan Port Dry Bulk Terminal (Phase I) is a key renovation project to improve the quality and efficiency of the existing operation area in the port area. By systematically upgrading and transforming the original small harbor pool yard operation area, it fills the gaps in the existing bulk cargo operation process and optimizes the entire chain operation system of loading, unloading, transportation, and warehousing in the port area. The project is located in the north bank operation area of Qianwan Port. It is planned to build 4 belt conveyors, 5 transfer machine rooms, 7 fixed material hoppers, 2 box transformers, as well as supporting facilities such as the dock and yard retaining walls, bulk cargo process supporting 1 # substation and production command center, fire pump station, etc. After the renovation is completed, the yard will mainly serve the 76 # (200000 ton class) unloading berth, 86 # (50000 ton class) unloading berth, 87 # (150000 ton class) unloading berth, as well as 63 # (50000 ton class) loading berth and 64 # (35000 ton class) loading berth in Qiangang, to meet the berthing needs of large ships. The main types of goods for engineering operations are coal, ore, and bauxite, with a designed annual transportation capacity of 31.6 million tons and a planned completion date of June 2027. According to the overall plan of Qingdao Port, the dry bulk cargo transportation function is gradually moving southward, and the berths on the north bank will be retained. This renovation is a further strengthening of its guarantee function.

Equipping the dock with a break point

Another project is located in Shannan Village, Tianheng Town, Jimo, adjacent to the Yellow Sea to the south, Nvdao Port to the southwest, Wangtai Mountain to the east, Qishan Mountain to the west, and a planned urban road to the north. The original design length of Terminal 2 was 590 meters, and it has now been completed for 460 meters. This project will rebuild the original Terminal 20 meters on the basis of the existing Terminal 2 and continue to build Terminal 2 for 130 meters. The current situation of the breakwater is that the breakwater has been built with a length of 545 meters, and a further 60 meters of breakwater will be constructed, with a total length of 605 meters. A one inch long dock provides more room for ships to dock and outfit simultaneously. Outfitting is a key link in the installation and commissioning of equipment after the ship is launched. After the project is completed, it will further improve the ship's outfitting and supporting capabilities, and help the development of Qingdao's shipbuilding industry. It is planned to be completed in the first half of 2027.

Two sons are playing a big game of chess

The two projects are not isolated. Since the beginning of this year, four port projects have started construction, including the North Third Pier 7-8 # berth project in Dongjiakou Port Area, the Bay Bottom General Terminal project in Langya Taiwan Operating Area, the Eastern Container Terminal project in Langya Taiwan Operating Area, and the Phase I renovation and expansion project of the North Bank Terminal in Qianwan Port Area. Qingdao Port has planned a series of major projects for many years, and all of them have started construction except for the Dongjiakou Port Area Middle Line Railway. The foundation is also getting thicker: by 2025, the cargo throughput of Qingdao Port will be 740 million tons, and the container throughput will be 32.89 million TEUs, an increase of 4.1% and 6.5% respectively year-on-year. The total number of shipping routes will reach 240, covering more than 700 ports in over 180 countries and regions worldwide; In the 2026 Xinhua Baltic International Shipping Center Development Index Report, Qingdao jumped from 13th to 12th place, continuing to lead the northern port cluster in China.
