China has fully implemented zero tariff measures on 53 African countries with diplomatic relations, covering thousands of categories of goods such as agricultural products, mineral products, light industrial products, and specialty crafts. From coffee gardens on the East African plateau to Chinese consumers' dining tables, from machinery and equipment in Chinese factories to industrial parks in Africa, China Africa economic and trade cooperation is reshaping a new development pattern in a mutually empowering manner. In 2025, the total bilateral trade value between China and 53 African countries with diplomatic relations reached a historical high of 348.08 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 17.7%.

Manufacturing cost reduction empowers industrialization

Africa's industrialization has long been constrained by four major problems: high production costs, difficulty in acquiring technology, expensive equipment investment, and lack of supporting industrial chains. China has built the world's largest, most complete, and well-equipped manufacturing system, with manufacturing added value ranking first in the world for consecutive years. For infrastructure equipment and building materials of the same specifications, the prices of Chinese products are generally reduced by 30% to 50% compared to European and American products, and they can be quickly supplied in bulk and efficiently implemented for construction. From basic building materials such as steel, cement, and cables, to complete sets of equipment such as construction machinery, power equipment, and communication base stations, China provides Africa with cost-effective, comprehensive, and one-stop infrastructure supporting solutions. In the field of light manufacturing, equipment for livelihood industries such as textiles, clothing, furniture, daily chemical products, and food processing has significantly reduced the entry threshold for African light industry; In the field of deep processing, the popularization of agricultural product processing and mineral rough processing equipment has helped Africa change its low-end trade model of direct export of primary products; In emerging industries, the large-scale output of China's photovoltaic, wind power, and energy storage equipment helps Africa solve the problem of power shortage.

Zero tariff market expansion to increase revenue

On May 1, 2026, China officially implemented zero tariff measures for 53 African countries that have diplomatic relations with China, significantly expanding the scope of zero tariff products exported from Africa to China, and achieving zero threshold, zero tax burden, and wide coverage of African advantageous products exported to China. According to estimates, the zero tariff policy has driven an overall increase of about 6% in Africa's exports to China. Taking the above customs zone data as an example, as of late June 2026, the total value of goods imported from 53 African countries with diplomatic relations in the Shanghai customs zone has exceeded 1.2 billion yuan, with a cumulative reduction of 120 million yuan in taxes. African advantageous agricultural products have benefited the most significantly. In the first quarter of 2026, China's imports of coffee from Africa increased by 70.4% year-on-year, and imports of cocoa beans increased by 56.8% year-on-year. Nigeria is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the zero tariff policy. In the first half of 2026, the total trade volume between China and Nigeria reached 17.4 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 35%. Among them, China imported 2.25 billion US dollars from Nigeria, a significant year-on-year increase of 81%. At present, all 53 countries in Africa that have established diplomatic relations have achieved export growth to China through zero tariff policies, covering the entire region of East Africa, West Africa, South Africa, and North Africa. Bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit and win-win outcomes

China Africa economic and trade cooperation is not a one-way assistance, but a benign cooperation model of complementary advantages and two-way empowerment. Africa has abundant reserves of mineral resources, agricultural resources, and ecological resources. With the support of China's unconventional economic and trade cooperation and zero tariff import policies, China can obtain high-quality resource products from Africa in a stable and low-cost manner, effectively filling the domestic resource supply gap and optimizing the domestic resource supply structure. Meanwhile, Africa, as one of the fastest-growing and most promising continents in the global economy, has become a core blue ocean market for China's stable growth and expansion in foreign trade. In 2025, China's exports of non new energy products, high-end equipment, building materials equipment, and communication equipment will continue to grow rapidly, with over 40% of exports to Africa driven by foreign contracted projects. China has maintained its position as Africa's largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years, and the scale of China Africa trade has jumped from less than 40 billion US dollars in 2005 to 348.08 billion US dollars in 2025. The mutually beneficial and win-win economic and trade cooperation model between China and Africa has broken the traditional unequal and one-way plundering international economic order, and constructed a new paradigm of international economic and trade that treats each other equally, shares benefits, and develops together, promoting the global economic pattern to develop towards a more balanced, inclusive, and win-win direction.Editor/Gao Xue
