On October 31, 2026, the first concrete pouring of the nuclear island of Haiyang Nuclear Power Unit 5, a key project of the National 15th Five Year Plan, was launched, and the third phase of the project officially entered the main construction stage.

The first nuclear power project in Shandong's 15th Five Year Plan officially starts construction

Haiyang Nuclear Power is located in Haiyang City, Shandong Province. It is one of the world's first third-generation nuclear power projects and the first nuclear power plant to be completed and put into operation in Shandong Province. The plant site is planned to construct 6 million kilowatt level nuclear power units in three phases. Units 5 and 6 of the third phase project, which will use domestically produced CAP1000 third-generation passive pressurized water reactor nuclear power technology, will be the first nuclear power project to start construction in Shandong in 2026.

The nuclear island is the most critical safety carrier of a nuclear power plant. The concrete raft foundation at the bottom of the nuclear island is responsible for bearing all the static weight of the nuclear island and resisting various loads under earthquake and extreme accident conditions, which is the first safety barrier for the operation of the nuclear power plant. The total volume of concrete pouring for the first tank of the nuclear island of Unit 5 this time is about 6626 cubic meters, using a one-time continuous pouring process. The expected pouring time for the entire process is nearly 62 hours, and the construction process follows the strictest quality control standards for nuclear power engineering.

The world's largest passive nuclear power base is accelerating its formation

With the official start of the third phase of construction, Haiyang Nuclear Power has entered a new stage of group reactor construction and operation, and the diversified development and cluster development pattern of nuclear energy continues to take shape. The first phase of Units 1 and 2 has been operating stably for many years, while the second phase of Units 3 and 4 is in the main construction stage and is expected to be fully operational by 2027. After the completion and operation of all two units in the third phase, Haiyang Nuclear Power will become the world's largest nuclear power base that fully adopts passive pressurized water reactor nuclear power technology. After the project is fully put into operation, its annual power generation can reach 60.9 billion kilowatt hours, which can meet the annual electricity demand of 54 million residents. It saves about 18.56 million tons of standard coal and reduces 48.63 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Its synchronous supporting heating capacity exceeds 150 million square meters, covering 25 county-level cities and providing stable zero carbon electricity and heat source support for the eastern mountainous area and surrounding areas.Editor/Cheng Liting
