On November 3, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a phone call with Philippine Foreign Minister Lazaro at the invitation.

Wang Yi stated that the current China Philippines relations are facing malicious interference, with a few Philippine politicians repeatedly attacking and smearing China out of political bias and personal interests, stepping on China's red line, politicizing normal economic, trade, and cultural exchanges, and infringing on the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese personnel and institutions in the Philippines. This kind of evil behavior is irrational, intolerable, and damages the international image of the Philippines. The Philippines should strengthen its constraints on relevant personnel and issue a rational and unified voice on its policy towards China. China's will to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity and achieve national unity is unwavering. The Philippines should implement the One China policy and be cautious in its words and actions on maritime issues.

Lazaro stated that the Philippines attaches great importance to its relations with China and hopes to develop stable and predictable bilateral relations. At present, countries are facing challenges in the fields of economy, energy, etc. The communication between the Philippines and China is conducive to managing differences, improving bilateral relations, and promoting regional peace and stability. The Philippines adheres to the One China policy and this position will not change. The Philippines is also willing to handle maritime and other issues with China through dialogue and consultation. As the rotating chair of ASEAN, the Philippines appreciates and expects China to play a greater role in promoting more achievements in the ASEAN China comprehensive strategic partnership.

Both sides have reached a basic consensus on improving the development of China Philippines relations: firstly, a healthy and stable China Philippines relationship is in line with both sides' interests and regional expectations, and both sides agree to maintain diplomatic dialogue on this matter. The second is to strive to eliminate various internal and external interference factors, and oppose any malicious provocations or actions that undermine the diplomatic efforts of both sides. Thirdly, both sides should responsibly manage differences, stabilize the situation, and seek to expand bilateral common interests.

Both sides also exchanged views on the upcoming East Asian Cooperation Leaders' Meeting in the Philippines and the subsequent Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders' Informal Meeting in Shenzhen, China.Editor/Min Jing
