On the vacant land in the outskirts of Yueyang, a gray and white giant slowly lifted off the ground, like a airship held by the wind, with the other end of the rope connected to ground equipment. The onlookers looked up and saw that this guy, who usually only appears in the wilderness testing ground, had flown to the edge of the residential area.

Flying power station

On November 6, 2026, the world's first 4000 meter floating wind power system successfully flew in Yueyang, Hunan. This is the first time that a 4000 meter floating wind power system has completed a flight test in an urban setting. The takeoff command is issued, and the S4000 floating wind power generation system slowly takes off to carry out multi subject verification such as attitude stability control under complex airflow and complex magnetic field power generation performance. The system is independently developed by Beijing Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology Co., Ltd. It is 67 meters long, 40 meters wide, and 23 meters high, with an altitude of up to 4000 meters. The output voltage covers 10 kV to 35 kV, and the airborne payload exceeds 1 ton. The designed service life is 20 years. It relies on a helium filled floating platform to send lightweight power generation modules to several kilometers high, where the more stable wind continues to generate electricity, which is then sent back to the ground through tethered cables. In August of this year, this system has completed the full process verification of launch, stay in the air, power generation testing, and stable recovery at a test base in Northwest China, withstanding high altitude, strong ultraviolet radiation, and large temperature differences. High altitude wind energy is still an unexplored area with high wind speed, stable wind direction, and high energy density. Currently, there are mainly two routes: land-based and air based. Land based systems leave heavy generators on the ground and rely on parachutes and floaters to pull cables to do work, while air based systems send generator sets up with floaters to generate electricity locally at high altitudes. From the wilderness to downstairs

The real test of urban flight testing is the safety and reliability above the heads of citizens. Chief architect Don Tianrui said that this time, more emphasis will be placed on testing the grid connection performance to see if the generator will interfere with power and posture stability when turned on. Cities are the core areas of power consumption, and the power supply system will ultimately move towards more densely populated areas. Cai Rong, a researcher of the Aerospace Information Innovation Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, believes that this test flight has verified the reliability of the entire floating system, the possibility and integrity of completing project delivery under real conditions around the city, and the ability to quickly deploy on site. It has opened up the key link of research and development, test, and operation, paved the way for airworthiness certification and scene demonstration, and promoted high-altitude wind power generation equipment from technical verification to industrial landing. Wind turbines are no longer just growing on mountain ridges and deserts, they are starting to find their place in the sky of cities.Editor/Min Jing
