The Kayunga water supply project in the Kayunga district of central Uganda received financial support from the African Development Bank in a loan of more than 6.5 million US dollars.

These funds will be used to fund the construction of drinking water pipelines in the Kayunga area, especially in the Busaana area. The pipeline will connect to the drinking water network of East African countries. The project also involves the construction of reservoirs in Kaazi, Bugadu, Kyampisi and Kiwangula villages.

The project is the second phase of Uganda's strategic urban water supply and sanitation project and will be carried out by Vambeco Enterprises Limited, a local engineering company engaged in construction services.

Expectations for Kayunga Water Supply Project

The drinking water project is mainly expected to provide clean drinking water to the people of Busan who currently rely on well bores and unprotected spring water.

Alex Twinomucunguzi, Deputy Director of Urban Water Affairs, Ministry of Water and Environment of Uganda, said that due to population growth, Kayunga's current tap water system is inadequate, and if it is not taken into consideration, this situation will be terrible in the region. In the next five years, the population of Kayunga area will surge to at least 100,000 people.

In this regard, the project is expected to expand to the semi-arid areas of the towns of Bbaale and Galilaaya, also in the Kayunga region. The first phase of the Uganda Strategic Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project was completed in 2019, and clean water is now provided from the Nile River to the people of Kasana. The project cost the government of the Republic of Uganda more than 3.2 million US dollars.

After Kayunga, the strategic urban water supply and sanitation project will be moved to Mukono District.Editor/Huang Lijun
