On October 26, 2020, the "Announcement on the Pre-examination of Qualifications for the Construction Unit Price of the Newly-built Chongqing-Kunming High-speed Railway Chongqing-Yibin Section" was officially released. According to the announcement, the Chongqing-Yibin section of the Chongqing-Kunming high-speed rail is scheduled to start on December 21, 2020. The construction period is four and a half years and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2025.

It is reported that the line leads from Chongqing West Railway Station, passing through Jiangjin District and Yongchuan District of Chongqing City, Luzhou City and Yibin City in Sichuan Province, Bijie City in Guizhou City, Zhaotong City and Qujing City in Yunnan Province, and finally to Kunming South Railway Station. The total length of the main line is 699 kilometers, of which 681 kilometers are newly built, and 18 kilometers of the Zigong-Yibin high-speed railway is used under construction.

There are 20 stations on the whole line (1 reserved station). Simultaneously construct this line to Chongqing West Railway Station Yuqianchang Relief Line, Shanghai-Kunming High-speed Railway Songming Station Link Line, and Luoyang Town Link Line, rebuild the Chongqing West-Jingkou Station section of the Yuqian Railway into a dual line, and build a new Kunming West Railway Station , Chongqing West Railway Depot 8 line EMU inspection warehouse.

The Sichuan-Chongqing section of the Chongqing-Kunming high-speed railway will be constructed from west Chongqing (excluding) to the boundary between Sichuan and Yunnan. According to the design speed of 350 km/h, the construction of a new double-line passenger dedicated line will cost approximately 48.9 billion yuan. The newly-built main line is 292.028 kilometers long, with 11 stations including Chongqing West, Jiulongpo (reserved), Jiangjin North, Yongchuan South, Luzhou East, Luzhou, Nanxi, Lingang, Yibin, Gaoxian and Junlian.
