The Awu Expressway is located in the northern part of Xinjiang. The route passes through Beitun City, Fuhai County, Wujiaqu City, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, and Urumqi City, with a total length of 342.538 kilometers and a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour. Among them, the section from Altay (Beitun) to Wujiaqu adopts the two-way four-lane expressway standard, and the section from Wujiaqu to Urumqi adopts the two-way six-lane expressway standard.

It was learned from the Awu Expressway Project Headquarters that the project was constructed in two phases, with a total of 12 bid sections set up for simultaneous construction. Among them, the first phase of the construction of the Huanghuagou to Urumqi section started in December 2019; the second phase of the Fuhai to Huanghuagou section started construction in May 2020.

On July 11, the construction road of S21 Altay-Urumqi Expressway Phase I Section 4 has been formed

According to reports, 10 of the 12 bidding sections have entered the asphalt paving stage, and the overall progress of the project has reached 67.88%. The construction of the Awu Expressway will provide convenience for people of all ethnic groups to travel, and at the same time will further strengthen the economic and cultural exchanges between regions and effectively promote the vigorous development of the Altay tourism industry. After the project is completed, it will open up a convenient passage between Altay and Urumqi, realizing the "high-speed direct connection" between the two places, and the journey will be shortened to about 4 hours.
