On July 1, 2023, the Qinghai Golmud 60000 kilowatt/600000 kilowatt hour liquid air energy storage demonstration project officially began construction. The demonstration project is located in Golmud East Export Photovoltaic Park, which is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2024.

Ran Qing, mayor of Golmud City, said that the smooth commencement of the demonstration project marks another solid step for Golmud City in building a highland of clean energy industry and a modern industrial system with Golmud characteristics.

Qiang Tongbo, the leader of the demonstration project from China Green Development Investment Group Co., Ltd., said: The 60000 kilowatt/600000 kilowatt hour liquid air energy storage demonstration project is a deep low-temperature cascade cold storage technology with independent intellectual property rights. After completion, it will become the world's largest demonstration project in the field of liquid air energy storage with the highest power generation and the largest energy storage scale. It will play a demonstration role in creating an original technology source and a modern industrial chain, and help Qinghai build a national clean energy industry highland

It is understood that the technology of liquid air energy storage project has many advantages, such as large-scale, long-term, long-life, low cost, and not limited by geographical conditions.
