Amazon has signed a corporate power purchase agreement with French utility company Engie to purchase clean energy from the Moray West offshore wind farm of 882MW in Scotland. According to the terms of the Power Purchase Agreement, Amazon will purchase a total of 473MW of electricity from the Scottish offshore wind facility once it is put into operation in late 2024. The purchased renewable energy will be sufficient to provide electricity to over 650000 British households annually.
Lindsay McQuade, Energy Director of Amazon Web Services EMEA, stated that we are achieving our ambitious goal of supplying global operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025. By 2022, 90% of Amazon's electricity consumption will come from renewable energy.
Projects like Moray West will play a crucial role in Amazon's operations and decarbonization of the UK power grid, and this agreement demonstrates Amazon's commitment to this ambition.
The offshore wind power project in western Mali is located in the Bay of Mali in northeastern Scotland and is mainly owned by offshore wind companies, with Ignitis Renewables holding a small stake.
Ocean Winds is a 50:50 joint venture established by Engie and EDP Renewable Energy Company in 2019. Currently under construction, the fully agreed Western Mali project will have 60 wind turbines, each generating 14.7MW of electricity.
Scottish offshore wind farms are expected to inject up to £ 500 million into the local economy of Scotland over their lifespan. In addition, the offshore wind power project in western Mali will create and support over 1000 job opportunities in Scotland, with 70 long-term operational roles in its construction phase.
Paul Almirante, Senior Executive Vice President of Renewable Energy and Energy Management at Engie, stated that Moray West reflects our strategy to accelerate the transition to a carbon neutral world by investing in renewable energy generation technologies.
In addition, the innovation of this CPPA suggests that it is possible to create conditions with Amazon to achieve the UK's goals of renewable energy deployment and net zero economy.Editor/XingWentao
