North Korea and Russia announced the construction of a 17-kilometer transnational highway bridge on the Tumen River, marking a new milestone in the transportation cooperation between the two countries. This decision was reached during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang, North Korea on June 19, heralding the deepening of economic cooperation and regional connectivity between the two sides.
At present, land transportation between North Korea and Russia mainly relies on a railway bridge, and the planning of a new highway bridge will undoubtedly greatly expand the trade channels and tourism potential of the two countries, and promote the free flow of goods and people by extending the railway network to the highway system, further stimulating bilateral economic vitality.
It is worth noting that although there have been precedents for similar projects in the past (such as the new Yalu River Bridge between China and North Korea, which failed to be put into use due to the delay in the construction of supporting roads), the background of this Russian-North Korean cooperation is different from the past. With the improvement of North Korea's strategic position in Russia, especially the close relationship in military cooperation and material supply, it provides a more solid foundation for the smooth progress of the highway bridge project.
In addition, this project is not the first time to be proposed. As early as 2015, Russia and South Korea had discussed a similar bridge-building plan, although it was shelved due to changes in the international situation. However, with the evolution of the international political landscape and the continued warming of Russian-North Korean relations, this long-discussed topic has been put on the agenda again and is expected to make substantial progress.
Researcher Cui Enzhu of the Sejong Institute in South Korea pointed out that even if the Ukrainian conflict is resolved in the future, the close ties between Russia and North Korea are likely to continue, showing the stability and long-term nature of the cooperation between the two countries in many fields. Therefore, the construction of the Tumen River Transnational Highway Bridge is not only a consolidation of the current cooperation results, but also a forward-looking layout for the in-depth development of bilateral relations in the future.Editor/Cheng Ting
