After more than two decades of careful preparation and anticipation, the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, finally ushered in the start of the construction of Metro Line 2, a historic moment fixed on September 16, 2024. The 10.5-kilometre-long line features seven modern stations along the route and is expected to be fully operational in 2028, with some stations expected to be ready for public access in 2026. This project is not only a major upgrade of Belo Horizonte's urban transport infrastructure, but also marks the arrival of 24 advanced trains manufactured by CRRC Coach in the city, injecting new vitality and development impetus into this core city in southeastern Brazil.
As a key part of Metrô BH's concession strategy, Metro Line 2 not only expands the coverage of the metro network, but also aims to provide citizens with more convenient and efficient travel solutions through the efficient use of existing railway resources through ground paving. In addition, Metrô BH has launched a comprehensive upgrade plan for 19 existing stations on Line 1 and the extension of the new El Dorado station, with the aim of improving the overall efficiency of the metro system in all aspects.
In terms of technological innovation, Metrô BH has spared no effort to introduce a number of cutting-edge technologies, including full WiFi coverage and LED dynamic information screens, with the aim of creating a more user-friendly and intelligent passenger experience. In particular, the 24 new metro trains carefully built by CRRC Changchun not only realize the advanced functions of autonomous driving, but also lead the industry trend with a speed of up to 80 kilometers per hour. These trains will begin arriving in early 2026, first serving Line 1 and then putting into operation Line 2, gradually replacing existing older trains and significantly improving capacity and service quality.
In order to further improve the convenience of passengers, Belo Horizonte Metro has also innovatively launched an electronic ticketing system to achieve full coverage of contactless payment. With a single flick of a credit card, debit card, digital wallet or even a smartwatch, passengers can quickly complete the ticketing process, greatly reducing the waiting time in line and improving the efficiency of travel. This series of measures will undoubtedly bring unprecedented travel experience and convenience to the citizens of Belo Horizonte.Editor/Jiang Mingyue
