On July 20, 2026, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan laid the foundation stone for the sixth section of the Tabora Kigoma standard gauge railway in Kigoma. On the same day, the expansion of Kigoma Port and the construction plan of four 2000 ton lake cargo ships were also launched simultaneously. The signal released by the simultaneous advancement of railways, ports, and ships is very clear: the $2.74 billion main project is just the beginning, and the supporting demand for cross-border logistics channels in East Africa is being gradually released.

Supporting opportunities are starting to be released

The contract for the Tabora Kigoma railway was signed in December 2022 and is being constructed by a consortium of China Railway Construction and China Civil Engineering. The total length of the line is 506 kilometers, including 10 passenger stations and two large freight facilities in Uvenza and Katoshao. The project progress has exceeded 10% and is planned to be completed by 2030.

The main civil engineering layout has been determined, and subsequent orders will be concentrated in professional subcontracting and freight nodes. There are clear requirements for track materials, turnouts, communication signals, traction power supply, detection and maintenance equipment, as well as station machinery, loading and unloading machinery, storage systems, and spare parts. Suppliers should refer to the engineering list, select specific systems for entry, and then verify the procurement plan and technical standards of the main contractor.

Formation of multimodal transport interface

Kigoma is located on the east bank of Lake Tanganyika and is a key interchange point for the railway after reaching the lakeside. After the goods arrive, they need to go through port loading and unloading, lake transportation, and roads within the Democratic Republic of Congo before entering mining areas such as Kalemie and Manono.

Four 2000 ton cargo ships have been unveiled, and the 310 meter cargo terminal at Kigoma Port has been simultaneously renovated. The annual processing capacity is expected to increase from 800000 tons to 2 million tons, and the water depth will increase from 3.5 meters to 6 meters. Zijin Mining also plans to construct approximately 500 kilometers of road connecting Manono and Kalemie Port. Port machinery, storage yards, warehouses, ship maintenance, freight forwarders, customs clearance, and road transportation in mining areas all have follow-up needs.

Quantity based return

The African Development Bank has provided $696.41 million in financing and coordinated up to $1.2 billion in syndicated funds to support the railway section. In March 2026, Tanzania, Burundi and DRC reviewed the research progress of railway extension.

For supporting enterprises, the quantity of goods determines the return. Key attention should be paid to whether the mine has signed long-term transportation contracts, whether lake ships can form stable schedules, whether port expansion can be put into use on schedule, and whether railway freight rates are competitive. Without two of them, warehouse and fleet utilization will be affected. Landing the mining contract first and expanding the supporting facilities is a more secure choice.
