On January 22, 2025, the signing ceremony for the West Gurna-1 Oilfield Water Injection Project (referred to as the West Gurna-1 Water Injection Project) in Iraq was successfully held at the headquarters of China Petroleum Engineering Construction Company. Li Xiaoning, Executive Director of CPC Engineering Construction, and Chen Mingzhuo, General Manager of PetroChina (Iraq) West Ghorna Company, respectively signed the project contract on behalf of both parties.

Project Overview and Significance

The Xigu Water Injection Project is the largest EPC project initiated by China Petroleum as the lead contractor for the Xigurna-1 oilfield, and it is also the most advanced high-pressure water injection project among the major oil fields in southern Iraq. The project aims to inject the processed produced water under high pressure to supplement and maintain formation pressure, thereby achieving sustained high and stable production and improving crude oil recovery. The project design water injection pressure is about 24 megapascals, and the water injection pipeline network covers about 260 kilometers. It will be carried out in two phases, including expansion and construction of water injection stations and water injection pipelines. After the project is put into operation, the oilfield's water injection capacity will be increased to 1.5 million barrels per day.
