On March 3rd, BYD Energy Storage, a subsidiary of BYD, and Greenvolt Power, a subsidiary of Portugal's Greenvolt Group, signed an agreement to jointly develop two Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in Poland, with a total power of 400 MW and an energy storage capacity of 1.6 GWh.
The contract covers the design and operation of two energy storage projects, each with a capacity of 200 MW/800 MWh, located in Turo ś ń Ko ś cielna and Nowa Wie ś E ł cka. The projects will be connected to the Polish 110kV and 220kV transmission networks and have both been awarded contracts in the Polish capacity market.
Jo ã o Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group, said, "This is our largest contract signed in Europe so far, and our partnership with BYD Energy Storage reflects our determination to advance energy storage solutions, which are crucial for maximizing renewable energy integration
At present, the first phase of the contract - the construction of substation infrastructure - has been initiated. Delivery will begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, with full installation expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
As one of the world's leading BESS suppliers, BYD's BESS shipment volume in 2023 reached 28.4 GWh, with a global market share of 15%, ranking second in the world. Although the shipment volume slightly decreased to 27 GWh and the market share dropped to 9% in 2024, ranking third, BYD signed a large-scale energy storage agreement with Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) for 12.5 GWh in early 2025.
With policy support, the Polish energy storage market will become one of the most attractive markets in Europe by 2025. The Clean Horizon report shows that after the opening of the Polish ancillary services market in December 2024, the annualized revenue of centralized energy storage ranges from 208000 euros/MW to 305000 euros/MW. The market response has been enthusiastic. In the January 2025 Polish capacity market auction, The total amount of awarded storage capacity reached 2.5 GW, an increase of 47% from 1.7 GW in 2024. Alexandra Radwanska, the regional manager of Next Kraftwerke in Poland, Germany, pointed out that the size of the Polish electricity market has now exceeded the sum of Belgium and the Netherlands.
