On the Gobi Desert and vast sea, another energy industry landmark is about to rise. On X month X day, 2025, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Public Resource Trading Center released a bid announcement, and XX Energy Group, a leading domestic coal chemical enterprise, successfully won the bid for the large-scale coal chemical integration project in the Zhundong Economic and Technological Development Zone of Xinjiang, with a total investment of 16.8 billion yuan. The implementation of this heavyweight project will not only fill the gap in the high-end coal chemical industry chain in Xinjiang, but also inject strong impetus into the transformation and upgrading of the Northwest Energy Base, helping to deepen the "Xinjiang Coal Conversion" strategy.

Building a coal based new materials industry cluster
According to public information, the winning bid project is located in the Zhundong Economic and Technological Development Zone in Xinjiang, with a planned area of about 5000 acres. The construction content covers an annual output of 2 million tons of coal to methanol, 500000 tons of olefins, and downstream new material supporting facilities. At the same time, auxiliary facilities such as self owned power plants, sewage treatment plants, and warehousing logistics will be built. After the completion of the project, it will rely on the abundant coal resources in the Zhundong area to achieve the full industry chain transformation from raw coal to high-end chemical products. It is expected that the annual output value will reach 8.5 billion yuan, with profits and taxes exceeding 1.2 billion yuan.
The Zhundong region has large coal reserves and excellent quality, making it an important coal production base for the country. However, for a long time, it has mainly relied on the transportation of raw coal, resulting in low industrial added value. The project leader of XX Energy Group stated that the winning bid project will adopt leading domestic technologies such as pulverized coal pressure gasification and olefin separation, greatly improving resource utilization efficiency. At the same time, supporting construction of carbon capture and storage (CCS) devices will be carried out to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30% and create a green and low-carbon modern coal chemical demonstration base.

Building a Northwest Energy Economic Growth Pole
As a province with abundant coal resources in China, Xinjiang accounts for over 40% of the country's total coal reserves, but the development of the coal chemical industry is still in its early stages. In recent years, with the promotion of the "dual carbon" target and the deepening of energy structure adjustment, Xinjiang has accelerated the transformation from "domestic sales of Xinjiang coal" to "conversion of Xinjiang coal", focusing on the development of high-end coal chemical projects such as coal to olefins and coal to ethylene glycol, and building a diversified and high value-added energy chemical industry system.
The landing of the 16.8 billion yuan coal chemical project is a landmark event in the transformation and upgrading of Xinjiang's energy industry. During the project construction period, it will directly drive the development of local upstream and downstream industries such as construction, machinery, and transportation, creating over 3000 job opportunities; After being put into operation, it will further attract downstream enterprises such as plastic products and chemical fiber materials to settle in, forming an industrial cluster effect and promoting the construction of the Zhundong Economic and Technological Development Zone into a national level coal chemical industry demonstration zone. The implementation of this project will effectively improve the on-site conversion rate of coal resources in Xinjiang, help the Northwest Energy Base transform from 'fuel' to 'raw material', and provide a new growth engine for the high-quality development of the regional economy, "said the relevant person in charge of the Xinjiang Development and Reform Commission

Leading the green development of the coal chemical industry
During the critical period of transformation and upgrading in the coal chemical industry, green and low-carbon have become the core competitiveness. The winning bidder XX Energy Group has been deeply involved in the coal chemical industry for many years and possesses core technologies with multiple independent intellectual property rights. It is reported that the project will adopt independently developed high-efficiency pulverized coal gasification technology to achieve a coal gasification efficiency increase of over 95%; Simultaneously constructing waste heat recovery systems and sewage treatment recycling facilities to achieve zero discharge of industrial wastewater and full utilization of waste heat resources.
In addition, the project will explore the integrated development model of "coal chemical industry+new energy", utilizing Xinjiang's abundant solar and wind energy resources to provide green power support for production facilities and further reduce the project's carbon emission intensity. Our goal is to create a modern coal chemical project that integrates' efficient utilization of resources, green and low-carbon production, and coordinated industrial development ', setting a benchmark for the industry, "said the project's technical leader.
With the release of the project bidding announcement, all preliminary preparations have been fully launched. The project is expected to commence construction by the end of 2025 and be completed and put into operation in 2028. At that time, a modern coal chemical industry new city will emerge on the Gobi Desert in Zhundong, marking a significant milestone in the upgrading and rewriting of the energy landscape in Northwest China.Editor/Bian Wenjun
