Recently, amidst the bustling booths and frequent meetings at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024), a cooperation focused on the construction of future digital infrastructure has quietly been finalized. Uzbekistan's Minister of Digital Technology, Sherzod Shermatov, held hands tightly with the ZTE delegation led by Senior Vice President James Zhang and jointly signed a memorandum of cooperation on the development of communication technology and infrastructure. This is not just a handshake between two entities, but more like the foundation laying ceremony of a new bridge pier on the Digital Silk Road.

Currently, the digital wave is sweeping across the globe, and Central Asia, with its young population and growth potential, is becoming a new hotspot for the development of the digital economy. In recent years, Uzbekistan has vigorously promoted digital reforms and is eager to build a smarter and more interconnected society. The cooperation with ZTE, a Chinese communication technology company that has been deeply involved in the global market for many years, aims to leverage leading technology to quickly fill the gaps in infrastructure and draw a clear digital upgrade roadmap.

Comprehensive upgrade in three major areas

According to the signed memorandum, the cooperation between the two parties will mainly focus on three core areas in depth:

Firstly, the development and expansion of mobile communication and broadband networks. This means that Uzbekistan's mobile network coverage, capacity, and speed will be systematically improved, and fixed broadband access capabilities will also be expanded, laying a physical foundation for the popularization of high-definition video, large-scale online applications, and other businesses.

Next is the introduction and deployment of next-generation communication technology. The cooperation will focus on exploring and preparing for the implementation of cutting-edge technologies such as 5G-A and future 6G, with the aim of seizing the commanding heights of future technologies and ensuring that Ukraine's communication network does not fall behind in terms of generations.

Finally, there is the modernization upgrade of data center facilities. In the era of explosive demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence, powerful, green, and efficient data centers are the "heart" of the digital economy. Both parties will cooperate to upgrade relevant infrastructure to accommodate the growing demand for data processing and storage, and support various digital innovation applications.

From Technology to Digital Ecology

During the pre signing meeting, Minister Shermatov and James Zhang discussed in depth how to transform the aforementioned technological blueprint into practical development outcomes. The topic goes beyond simple equipment procurement or network construction, and focuses more on how to promote the overall development of the digital economy.

Both parties discussed the specific opportunities for introducing innovative solutions in communication networks and launching new services based on advanced technologies. This implies that cooperation may extend to multiple vertical fields such as smart cities, industrial Internet, and digital government, aiming to use advanced communication network "pipelines" to deliver rich digital "live water" and cultivate local digital industry ecology.

ZTE representatives highly praised Uzbekistan's series of reform policies in the telecommunications field, believing that they have provided a favorable environment for technological cooperation. James Zhang stated that ZTE is optimistic about the potential of the Ukrainian market and is willing to further expand its technological cooperation with Ukraine, sharing successful practical experience in China.

Co building the Digital Silk Road

The signing of this memorandum of cooperation is a microcosm of international scientific and technological cooperation, and a vivid manifestation of mutual benefit and win-win under the Digital Silk Road initiative. For Uzbekistan, this is a key assistance in achieving its strategic goal of "Digital Uzbekistan 2023-2025". Through cooperation with Chinese enterprises, it is expected to quickly access the world's advanced digital technology system and accelerate the country's economic and social digital transformation. For Chinese enterprises, this provides an opportunity for technology companies, including ZTE, to deeply participate in the digital construction of Central Asia. While supporting the development of neighboring countries, it can promote the application and landing of Chinese technology, standards, and solutions, and achieve common development.Editor/Yang Meiling
