With the official launch of the "Mirwind" 1 GW wind power project, this green project of Chinese enterprises "going global" will not only light up vast grasslands, but also mark a crucial step for Kazakhstan on the road to new energy transformation. The wind power "feast" led by Shanghai Electric is becoming a vivid footnote to China Kazakhstan energy cooperation and the joint pursuit of a "dual carbon" future.

On April 9, 2026, in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, the construction of the "Mirne" 1 GW wind power project, led by Shanghai Electric as the general contracting consortium, officially began. This is not only Kazakhstan's first gigawatt level wind power purchase agreement project, but also an important milestone in the country's new energy development. The project is jointly developed by Total Energy of France, Samruk Energy of Kazakhstan, and Kazakhstan National Oil and Gas Company. Shanghai Electric, with its technical accumulation and overall solution capabilities in the wind power field, has become the main provider of core equipment and engineering services for the project.
At the launch ceremony, Zhu Zhaokai, President of Shanghai Electric Group, stated that after the completion of the project, it will significantly enhance the power supply capacity of the local power grid and effectively guarantee the electricity demand for regional industrial production and people's livelihood. It is reported that the total construction period of the project is 31 months, and it is planned to be put into commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2028. It is expected that the annual power generation will reach 4 billion kilowatt hours, which is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 3.2 million tons per year. This has profound significance for optimizing Kazakhstan's energy structure and promoting green and low-carbon development.

The construction of the "Mirny" wind power project is an important practice for Chinese enterprises to deepen clean energy cooperation in Kazakhstan and even the Central Asian market. It will not only bring stable and clean power supply to the local area, but also help Kazakhstan build a more sustainable energy system through technological output and engineering collaboration. Under the cooperation framework of jointly building the the Belt and Road, such projects continue to be implemented, which is becoming a green link connecting China and foreign countries and promoting development together, injecting strong impetus into regional energy transformation and sustainable economic development.Editor/Yang Meiling
