On May 27, 2026, the world's leading offshore converter station, Haifengxin, officially set sail from Zhenhua Port in Nantong, Jiangsu and transported to the Yangjiang Sea area in Guangdong. After the equipment arrives, it will be installed and put into use at the Three Gorges Yangjiang Qingzhou Phase 5 and 7 offshore wind farms.

Set a new global record

As the world's highest voltage level and largest transmission capacity offshore wind power flexible DC converter station, the successful completion of Haifengxin marks the official entry of China's offshore wind power into a new stage of ultra-high voltage DC transmission, creating a replicable and promotable standardized technical paradigm for the development of far-reaching offshore wind power. This equipment is the world's first ± 500 kV, 2 million kW offshore flexible DC converter station, with a large scale, a total length of 85.5 meters, a width of 82.5 meters, and a height of 44 meters. It covers an area comparable to a standard football field, is about 15 stories high for residential buildings, and weighs 25000 tons overall.

Technological innovation breakthrough

According to Yang Bin, the project leader of Three Gorges Group Guangdong Branch, Haifengxin is equipped with the first intensive transmission system in China. Under strict space and weight constraints, various precision equipment such as electrical, HVAC, and fire protection can be integrated through compact design to centrally store the electrical energy generated by 163 wind turbines in two wind farms, complete the boost converter operation, effectively reduce the overall cost of the project, and save the area of sea use.

The core challenge in the development of deep-sea offshore wind power is the efficient and stable transmission of offshore electricity. And the Heart of Sea Breeze is equivalent to the core heart of offshore wind farms, which can convert the 66 kV AC power generated by wind turbines into ± 500 kV high-voltage DC power. Relying on flexible direct current transmission technology, approximately 6 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity can be transmitted annually, with energy loss reduced by 60% compared to traditional alternating current transmission, significantly improving transmission efficiency and laying a solid technological foundation for the large-scale development of offshore wind power.

In response to the harsh working environment of high salt spray and high humidity at sea, the equipment has been comprehensively upgraded and strengthened. At the same time, with unmanned and intelligent operation and maintenance modes, a remote centralized control, graded diagnosis, area operation and maintenance, and professional maintenance integrated management system is implemented, significantly improving the efficiency of wind power project operation and maintenance management. It is reported that Sea Breeze Heart will embark on a sea voyage of 1090 nautical miles and is expected to arrive at the Three Gorges Yangjiang Qingzhou Phase 5 and 7 wind farms over 70 kilometers offshore in a week. The project team will adopt mature floating installation technology to achieve precise docking and installation of prefabricated upper modules on land and offshore pipeline racks. Yang Bin stated that the follow-up team will closely follow the development strategy of Three Gorges Group's offshore wind power, focus on key processes of the project, strengthen work responsibilities, enhance multi-party collaboration, ensure quality and quantity, and promote subsequent construction work in a safe and orderly manner.Editor/Gong Ziwei
