Recently, at a signing ceremony in Amman, Jordan, Jordanian Energy Minister Hrabush exchanged the text of the cooperation agreement for the Maan wind power project with representatives from Masdar, United Arab Emirates. The agreement signed by both parties a few months ago marks the official landing of a 25 MW wind farm fully funded by the United Arab Emirates in the southern desert of Jordan. When Jordan still relies on imports for over 90% of its energy, this wind farm consisting of five wind turbines is opening a gap for energy independence for this Middle Eastern kingdom.

Ma An Feng Feng locks five wind turbines

The project is located in the Batn Al Ghul area of Ma'an Province in southern Jordan, with plans to install 5 wind turbines and a total installed capacity of 25 megawatts, fully funded by the United Arab Emirates. Masdar will be responsible for technical supervision, project implementation management, and logistics coordination, while Jordan Samra Power Company will undertake the specific construction work. After the completion of the project, Samra Company will be responsible for operation and maintenance, and can also choose to cooperate with Masdar or its subsidiaries for operation and maintenance. The Jordanian Ministry of Energy will provide the necessary land for the project and complete all regulatory approvals.

The proportion of renewable energy has risen to 20%

As of May 2026, the proportion of renewable energy in Jordan's national electricity generation has risen from almost zero ten years ago to over 20%. Ma'an and Aqaba provinces have extremely high levels of photovoltaic radiation and stable wind resources. The Jordanian government has attracted a large influx of international capital through grid electricity price subsidies, net metering policies, and public-private partnership regulations. As an early entrant, Masdar has built multiple benchmark photovoltaic projects in Jordan, and this wind power project further enhances its diversified energy landscape from light to wind in Jordan. The prospect of green hydrogen and green ammonia has surfaced

Masdar has clearly stated that it will explore the feasibility of developing green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in Jordan, with the aim of building Jordan into a regional hub for green energy exports. The abundant wind and solar resources in Jordan, combined with the implementation experience of the Maan wind power project, provide resource validation for larger scale green hydrogen electrolysis of water for hydrogen production. From photovoltaics to wind power, and then to green hydrogen and green ammonia, Jordan is leveraging the capital and technological experience of the United Arab Emirates to accelerate its transformation from an energy import dependent country to a regional clean energy supply node. When the wind in Ma'an blows the turbine blades, Jordan's green energy map is moving from paper planning to grid connection.Editor/Gao Xue
