Recently, the Federal Government of Nigeria plans to extend the Lagos Light Rail Red Line northward, directly to Murtala Mohammed Airport, connecting core hubs such as general aviation and new terminals, achieving seamless connection between urban rail and air passenger flow. It is reported that the first and second phases of the Red Line and the new airport terminal are all constructed by CCECC, and the entire line adopts Chinese standards. This extension project presents many opportunities in construction and equipment supply, and has high follow-up value for Chinese enterprises deeply rooted in Nepal.

The first phase of the Lagos Light Rail Red Line runs from Oyinbo Station to Agbado Station, with a total length of 26.5 kilometers and 8 stations. It fully adopts Chinese technical standards and is implemented by CCECC. On the day of its opening, the Lagos Transport Authority signed a second phase contract with China Civil Engineering, consolidating their cooperation. In addition, China Railway Group, multiple units of China Railway Construction, and enterprises such as CRRC Dalian have flourished in the railway market in Nepal, undertaking a large number of engineering and equipment businesses. Chinese enterprises have accumulated profound practical experience and resource advantages in the local area.

The core of this extension is to supplement the airport access function and promote the upgrade of the red line from a single commuting corridor to a comprehensive passenger transport channel for air rail intermodal transportation. Due to being an extension of the existing line, its standards, interfaces, and operational system are well structured, and the technical path is clear, greatly reducing the difficulty of implementation.

The new international terminal and the ongoing T1 renovation project at Murtala Mohammed Airport, where the extension line ends, are both implemented by CCECC. The pattern of both the track and the airport being constructed by Chinese enterprises provides a natural convenience for both parties to collaborate and unify standards in subsequent construction. The profound significance of this project lies in releasing the signal of Lagos' rail transit expanding towards networking, that is, shifting from single track construction to multi pole linkage with airports, ports, and new cities as nodes. From a market perspective, the project covers multiple sectors such as civil engineering, electromechanical integration, communication signals, vehicle power supply matching, and transfer hub construction. Given the need to be compatible with existing red line systems, Chinese enterprises with mature technology accumulation in the local area have significant first mover advantages in bid renewal and technology integration.Editor/Gong Ziwei
