NEXTDC, Australia's largest listed data center operator, has launched its first overseas station KL1 in Selangor, Malaysia, with a designed IT capacity of 65MW, Tier IV standards, and a RM2.8 billion investment in more than just a data center.
Over the past five years, Malaysia has achieved remarkable results in attracting investment in the field of data centers. According to the Malaysian Investment and Development Authority, the total approved investment in data centers and cloud computing in the country has reached RM144.4 billion from 2021 to mid-2025. But the uniqueness of KL1 lies in that it is not a regular hosting room, but a new type of infrastructure designed specifically for AI, cloud computing, and high-performance computing.

Malaysia's strategic intention is already clear: no longer relying solely on land and electricity costs to attract investment, but to transform these endowments into high-density, low latency, and scalable AI computing capabilities.
From a low cost area to a high computing power area
The focus of AI competition within ASEAN has changed. It's no longer who has lower electricity prices, but who can provide truly usable high-end computing power. NEXTDC has chosen Malaysia as its first overseas destination, and the logic behind it is also being upgraded.
This Australian operator is simultaneously advancing the Singapore SG2 and India Mumbai data center projects, with a three line layout indicating its focus on the incremental space of the entire Asia Pacific market. Malaysia happens to be at the intersection of Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia, and the emerging Singapore Malaysia Thailand digital corridor makes this location irreplaceable. Enterprises located here not only connect to the market of a country, but also to the most dynamic digital development belt.
Why did Selangor win the first stop
KL1 is located in Klang Valley, which is the commercial heart of Malaysia. Selangor is home to the most important manufacturing, financial, and technology giants in the country, and the industrial agglomeration effect brings about low latency response and convenient access to high-quality talent. The stable water and electricity supply, mature business environment, and NEXTDC's adherence to Tier IV standards make this an ideal location for high-density computing deployment. For Chinese companies that are going global, especially those engaged in AI big model training, fintech, and cross-border e-commerce, Malaysia, especially Selangor, is no longer just an alternative solution, but a strategic node worthy of being included in the core site selection list.Editor/Cheng Liting
