When a freight train loaded with over 30000 solar panels slowly departs from Wuxi West Station. At this moment, the construction of the China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan Railway is still in a critical stage, but this incomplete steel camel caravan has already exceeded the speed of China. This is not only the debut of a photovoltaic special train, but also the dawn of breaking through the strategic breakthrough that has been waiting for 27 years.

After 27 years of grinding a sword, the hammer finally fell

The concept of the China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan Railway can be traced back to 1997, but due to geopolitical disputes and financial and technical difficulties, the project was put on hold for 27 years. On June 6, 2024, the intergovernmental agreement between China, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine was officially signed, and the project was launched in December of the same year. In 2026, with the official construction of three control tunnels including Fergana Mountain, this cross-border railway with a total length of about 523 kilometers will enter the comprehensive construction period. It broke the geopolitical barriers that Russia had long regarded Central Asia as its backyard, ending the history of Central Asian goods having to bypass Kazakhstan, and marking a substantial breakthrough in China's influence in Central Asia.

The difficulty of the land lock has turned into a path of accessibility

On June 26, 2026, the first China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan photovoltaic special train departed, indicating that this channel has been activated ahead of schedule. After completion, the railway will shorten the transportation distance from China to the Middle East and Southern Europe by about 900 kilometers, saving 7 to 8 days in time. For Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, two landlocked countries, this means they are no longer constrained by others and can access the East Asian market at a lower cost. It is expected that the annual freight throughput will reach 13 million tons, which will increase the connectivity efficiency between Central Asia and the global market by more than 50%, completely changing the logistics map within the region. Energy artery solves Malacca dilemma

The core strategic value of this railway lies in opening up a new land-based energy lifeline for China. For a long time, about 80% of China's energy imports have relied on the Strait of Malacca, which has obvious strategic shortcomings. After the completion of the China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan Railway, it will directly bypass this throat and achieve direct land transportation of commodities such as oil. This not only ensures China's energy security, but also provides a solid physical basis for building a stable supply chain in Eurasia through diversified transportation modes, and injects strong momentum into the high-quality joint construction of the the Belt and Road.Editor/Gao Xue
