In the morning mist of Bohai Bay, a 400000 ton ore ship is slowly docking at the Caofeidian Port area of Tangshan Port. During the landing and takeoff of the shore bridge, iron ore cascades down like a black waterfall. In the first half of 2026, such a scenario will be intensively staged in China's coastal port groups - from the Beibu Gulf to the Bohai Gulf, from the Yangtze River Estuary to the the Pearl River Estuary, 28 key wharf projects will be promoted simultaneously, with a total investment of more than 60 billion yuan.

As the starting year of the 15th Five Year Plan, 2026 marks the acceleration of port infrastructure construction. Projects in multiple fields such as containers, bulk cargo, crude oil storage and transportation, and liquefaction chemicals are intensively implemented, and China's port throughput capacity is undergoing a new round of systematic upgrading.

Accelerate the implementation of billion ton level production capacity

The newly started projects in the first half of the year cover the main port clusters along the north and south coasts. In January, Beibu Gulf Port announced an investment of 15.6 billion yuan to build a 300000 ton ore terminal in Fangcheng Port and a 200000 ton bulk cargo berth in the Tieshan East Port area of Beihai, with an additional annual throughput capacity of over 80 million tons. The fifth phase of the Nansha Port Area project of Guangzhou Port started construction in May, with a total investment of 14.4 billion yuan. It will build four 200000 ton container berths with a designed annual throughput capacity of 6.7 million TEUs. The N9 berth in Beijiang Port Area of Tianjin Port will be upgraded in May, upgrading from a 70000 ton berth to a 200000 ton berth, which can accommodate the world's largest container ships for all-weather berthing. Huanghua Port entered the main construction of a 300000 ton crude oil terminal in March, with a supporting 900000 cubic meter storage tank area and a designed annual throughput capacity of 14.2 million tons.

Super engineering outline first appears

The Xiaoyangshan North Operation Area of Shanghai Port will be implemented in stages according to the western, middle, and eastern sections. The western section of the project is planned to be completed by the end of 2026, with the overall plan to build 7 new 70000 ton and 15 new 20000 ton container berths, with a designed annual throughput capacity of 11.6 million TEUs. The first phase of the Fodu Container Terminal at Ningbo Zhoushan Port has entered the main structure construction stage, with the construction of two new 200000 ton berths planned to be put into operation by the end of 2027, with an overall planned annual throughput capacity of 6.6 million TEUs. The second phase of the renovation of Shanghai Port Luojing Container Terminal's water and land infrastructure has been basically completed, and it is expected to be fully built by the end of the year, with an additional annual throughput capacity of 1.4 million TEUs. The renovation and expansion of the hydraulic structure at Jiangsu Yangtze Jiasheng LNG Terminal has been completed, with a planned completion date of December 2026. Two new 30000 ton LNG dedicated berths will be built. Keywords: Dry port logistics news、Land Port Logistics

The throughput level has substantially increased

Multiple large berths passed the completion acceptance and were put into operation in the first half of the year. Zhanjiang Port Baoman Port Area started heavy load debugging of berth 803 in June, with an added annual throughput capacity of 1.42 million TEUs. The Bohe New Port Area of Maoming Port completed the second phase acceptance of the general terminal in May, forming a layout of four 100000 ton general berths. Nantong Port Tongzhou Bay Yangkou Terminal was completed and accepted in March, with the addition of three 50000 ton berths. The 50000 ton liquefied hydrocarbon terminal in Tsuen Wan, Huizhou Port, was officially put into operation in June, with an annual designed throughput capacity of 2.5 million tons. The second phase of Xintian Port in Wanzhou, Chongqing will be completed and accepted by the end of June, with the addition of four 5000 ton bulk cargo berths. The successive production of these projects has led to a systematic leap in the throughput capacity of Chinese ports in various cargo fields such as containers, bulk cargo, crude oil, and liquefied chemicals, providing a more solid infrastructure support for the smooth global supply chain.Editor/Gao Xue
