When the sandstorms in the west meet the lights in the east, an energy exchange across mountains and rivers is taking place. Under the golden sand sea of Kubuqi, an invisible power artery is quietly growing as the pile foundation breaks through the soil, transforming the inexhaustible scenery into stable green kinetic energy in East China and reshaping the new map of China's energy geography.

The supporting coal-fired power project has officially started construction

On July 10, 2026, the supporting coal-fired power project for the transmission of Kubuqi Desert electricity to Shanghai officially started construction, and the key project of the national 15th Five Year Plan for electric power, the Huaneng Kubuqi 10 million kilowatt level Shagehuang Comprehensive Energy Base, was fully launched. This project is the first approved and initiated coal-fired power project for the Shagehuang base in China during the 15th Five Year Plan period. After completion, it can stabilize the power supply stability of the Mengxi to Shanghai ultra-high voltage transmission line.

The base adopts a diversified development model

The overall installed capacity of the base can reach 15 million kilowatts, and an integrated development plan will be implemented for the coordinated construction of wind power, photovoltaic power, thermal power, and energy storage. The project fully taps into desert wind and solar resources to layout new energy, synchronously configuring four 660000 kilowatt environmentally friendly coal-fired power generation units, and relying on the newly built Mengxi to Shanghai ultra-high voltage transmission line to deliver a large amount of clean energy to the outside world. After the base is fully built and put into operation, it can reduce more than 17 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, enhance the stability of power supply in Shanghai and the entire East China region, accelerate the process of regional energy green upgrading, and help achieve the development goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.Editor/Gong Ziwei
