The sea breeze swept over the waves off the coast of Brazil, and the lights of the Itayai City stayed on all night. With the successful completion of underground operations, the dormant PRA-2 well erupted again. The awakening of this key oil well has revitalized the Baona Oilfield, fully restored its production system, and injected confidence into this international energy enterprise deeply rooted in the deep sea to move forward steadily.

The oil well resumed production smoothly

Karoon Energy, an international oil and gas exploration and production company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, has restarted production operations for another oil well in Brazil's offshore oil field. Karoon Energy confirmed that after completing the underground special operation, reconnecting the umbilical cable, and restoring the connection of the electric submersible pump, the PRA-2 well in the Brazilian Baona oil field has officially resumed production. The oil field is currently being operated by the Itayay floating production storage and unloading oil tanker.

It is reported that the umbilical cable of PRA-2 well suddenly detached from the floating production storage and unloading oil tanker in October 2025. After special maintenance, the oil well resumed production smoothly. At present, the daily crude oil production of this oil well remains stable in the range of 1000 to 1200 barrels. With the resumption of production in PRA-2 well, the overall daily crude oil production of Baona oilfield has reached about 22000 barrels, of which SPS-92 well contributes about 8600 barrels of crude oil per day. The oilfield operator stated that all production wells under the Baona project have been fully put into operation and are operating normally, and the oilfield production system has been restored to a complete state.

Improving the quality of enterprise development

Karoon Energy CEO and Managing Director Kari Lockhart stated that in the first half of 2026, the company's core work will focus on restoring production capacity, improving production efficiency, and enhancing equipment reliability in the Baona oil field. All related work has been safely and successfully completed on schedule.

At present, the major infrastructure renovation project of Baona Oilfield has been fully completed, and the company has officially entered a new operational stage of optimizing production capacity and revitalizing investment value. After the upgrade and renovation of the self floating production storage and unloading oil tanker, the operating efficiency of the equipment has remained stable at a high level in the target range of 90% -95%, and the quality of oilfield operation has been greatly improved. Karoon Energy stated that the resumption of oil well production this time is a key progress for the company to increase production, reduce costs, and optimize cash flow in the second half of the year. The overall effectiveness will depend on the trend of oil prices and stable operations to continue to be implemented. Lockhart added that in the second half of 2026, the company will achieve a high cash flow profit margin, continuously optimize its balance sheet, and help with rational capital allocation and long-term shareholder value enhancement through low-cost operating models, high-quality breakeven levels, and stable production capacity.Editor/Gong Ziwei
