On July 19, 2026, news came from the Hetao Basin in Inner Mongolia that the total crude oil production of Bayan Oilfield had exceeded 6 million tons. Just seven months ago, this number was still 5 million tons. Completing a million ton step in just over six months is a speed that is not commonly seen in the development of deep oil fields in China.

Daily production contributes nearly one-third to North China

Data is the most indicative of the problem. In the first half of 2026, Bayan Oilfield will produce over 870000 tons of crude oil, achieving 51% of the annual plan, with a stable daily output of 4800 tons, a year-on-year increase of 20%. This production accounts for nearly one-third of the daily output of Huabei Oilfield.

From a timeline perspective, this acceleration is more intuitive: the first million tons took 49 months, followed by four million tons compressed in sequence to 13 months, 10 months, 9 months, and 8 months. The sixth million tons only took 7 months. Since the first high-yield industrial oil flow well was drilled in 2018, this oil field has completed the decades long journey of some old oil fields in less than eight years.

Technological breakthrough at a depth of 5000 meters

This speed is not easy to come by. The average burial depth of the main oil fields in the Hetao Basin exceeds 5000 meters, making it the deepest buried intact continental clastic rock reservoir in China. The technical path adopted by Bayan Oilfield is to inject gas into the top and waist of the reservoir and water into the edges, controlling the natural decline rate of production at 8%. This oil field has also built China Petroleum's first intelligent station using optical bus control technology, and the AI model can automatically adjust 17 key production processes.
