By the end of 2025, the proportion of renewable energy generation has just exceeded 7%. Half a year later, this number jumped to 8.08%, with a year-on-year increase of 20.5% in power generation. On the chessboard of global energy transition, Kazakhstan is rewriting its energy structure at an unexpected pace.

3750 MW installed capacity supports 20.5% increase

As of the end of the first half of 2026, the total installed capacity of renewable energy facilities in Kazakhstan reached 3749.62 megawatts. Among them, wind power accounts for the majority -2058.95 MW, photovoltaic power generation 1375.21 MW, small hydropower 313.69 MW, and biomass energy 1.77 MW.

The power generation data is equally impressive. In the first half of the year, the renewable energy generation reached 5.1045 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 20.5%. Wind power contributed 3.379 billion kilowatt hours, accounting for 66% of renewable energy generation; Photovoltaic power generation is 1.102 billion kilowatt hours, and small-scale hydropower is 622 million kilowatt hours. Compared to the 7% share of renewable energy generation in 2025, the half year performance of 8.08% is clearly ahead of the plan.

The total power generation in China is 63.4 billion kilowatt hours, which is 101.9% of the same period in 2025. The proportion of renewable energy in total power generation is steadily increasing from 7% a year ago.

Add 8 gigawatts in ten years

The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan plans to increase the annual renewable energy generation to 8.8 billion kilowatt hours by 2026. To support this goal, 10 new projects are planned to be put into operation throughout the year, with a total installed capacity of 245.8 megawatts, covering 4 wind farms, 5 solar power stations, and 1 hydropower station. A longer-term goal has also been set: to increase the proportion of renewable energy generation to 15% by 2030, and to add over 8 gigawatts of renewable energy installed capacity by 2035.
