Since 2026, China has made every effort to accelerate the construction of modern water networks, and investment in water conservancy construction has continued to maintain a high level, with an overall good start.
From January to June 2026, 33000 water conservancy projects will be implemented nationwide, with a total investment of 515.1 billion yuan in water conservancy construction. The construction of a number of national water network backbone transmission and drainage channels and important regulation and storage nodes, such as the allocation of water resources around the Beibu Gulf and the Yellow River Guxian Water Conservancy Hub, is accelerating.
At the construction site of the follow-up project of the South to North Water Diversion Project, the Yangtze River Diversion Project, 8 hard rock excavation machines operated synchronously, and the cumulative excavation of the water conveyance main tunnel exceeded 31 kilometers.
Around the implementation of a new round of 100 billion jin grain production capacity improvement project, a number of large and medium-sized irrigation area construction and modernization projects, such as the Leizhou Peninsula Irrigation Area in Guangdong and the Pishihang Irrigation Area in Anhui, have started construction one after another. From January to June 2026, 25 major water conservancy projects, including the construction of the Three Gorges Water Transport New Channel and the allocation of water resources in the Liaodong Peninsula of Liaoning Province, will be launched nationwide, 11 more than the same period in 2025.
At the same time, China has scientifically laid out the construction of reservoirs, rivers, embankments, and flood storage areas based on river basins, and accelerated the construction of flood control and drainage systems in river basins.
The Menghe Shuanghou Reservoir is a major water conservancy project in the comprehensive planning of the Huaihe River Basin. At the construction site, mechanical equipment and construction personnel are carrying out concrete pouring operations on the main body of the bridgehead and the hoist room through multi-point collaborative work.
At present, 35 of the 40 backbone water transmission and drainage channels planned and constructed by the national water network have been built or are under construction, and 473 of the 588 important regulation and storage nodes planned and constructed have been built or are under construction.
