On August 6, 2026, Kyrgyzstan's Minister of Transport, Soltobayev, and Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Liu Jiangping, sat at a table and unfolded a draft of a cross-border bridge construction agreement: on the Uzenggu Kush River on the Kyrgyzstan China border, the two countries will jointly build a Bedel Port highway border bridge. After the paper was finalized, another passage from Xinjiang to the hinterland of Central Asia along the China Kyrgyzstan border began to move from the map to the construction site.

Bridge the boundary river to fill the gap

The Beider Port used to be mostly a seasonal and temporary transit point, and the one that really stuck in normal customs clearance was the Uzonggu Kush River that runs across the border. The core of the intergovernmental agreement discussed by both parties this time is to nail down the cooperation arrangement of this highway border bridge: who will pay, who will construct, how to manage and maintain it, and how customs will handle it.

During the talks, the Kyrgyzstan side clarified that the agreement covers the entire chain arrangement from the construction of a bridge over the Uzenggu Kush River on the Kyrgyzstan China border to the subsequent port support. Once the bridge is connected, the Balskon Bader Aksu highway can be linked together - starting from Balskoen on the shores of Lake Issyk Kul in Kyrgyzstan, crossing the mountain entrance into Aksu, Xinjiang, and pulling the northern part of Kyrgyzstan and Xinjiang, China into the same road network.

Highway and railway double track running

Bedel is not fighting alone. On the same map of China Kyrgyzstan transportation cooperation, the China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan railway has entered substantive construction: the construction of three tunnels in Kyrgyzstan, namely Ferghana Mountain, Naren No.1, and Koshtbo, has started. The total investment of the entire line is about 4.7 billion US dollars, with a total length of 304 kilometers. The skeleton of the shortest railway channel in the east-west direction is being erected.

The highway takes the Beider Pass for fast in and fast out, and the railway takes the Zhongjiwu Line for long-distance transportation. The two systems are staggered and complementary. In the long run, the railway connection plan between Aksu Beider and Barecki has also entered the feasibility study, and Beider will upgrade from a highway junction to a road rail intermodal transportation node in the future. According to industry calculations, the freight transportation time from Xinjiang to Tashkent can be reduced by 7 to 10 days, and the cost can be reduced by about 30%.

Central Asian nodes move forward

The bilateral trade volume between China and Kyrgyzstan has increased by 8 times in the past few years, reaching a historical high of 27.2 billion US dollars in 2025. The old ports of Turgat and Irkeshtam are under pressure, and Bedier has just tested the opening and closing of the port in March 2026 and released 10000 tons of materials in four months. Bedier has become the third point of strength.

For Kyrgyzstan, the Bader Corridor directly connects the northern Issyk Kul Economic Zone with Xinjiang by land, without having to detour through the old southern route; For Xinjiang, China, there is an additional exit point towards Aksu, and in addition to the three major ports of China and Kyrgyzstan (Turgat, Irkeshtan, and Biedili), Beider is added, which instantly opens up the flexibility of customs clearance. The transportation of fuel and lubricants, international road transport agreements, and customs support are also on the table in this round of talks. Channels are not just about road construction, but also about weaving logistics, customs clearance, and energy supply into the network.keywords:Engineering infrastructure

The bridge agreement is still in preparation, and the road is still being paved, but the direction is clear: China Kyrgyzstan transportation cooperation is upgrading from a single port connection to a comprehensive logistics network that runs together with highways, railways, ports, and hubs. Bedel is the latest screw tightened in this network.Editor/Yang Meiling
