Multiple nuclear power projects are accelerating their implementation, delivering stable and clean electricity resources to coastal areas. By 2026, China will increase its efforts in nuclear power project construction, and the scale of nuclear power engineering construction will remain the world's largest. Not long ago, with the completion of the lifting of the passive safety shell cooling water tank for Unit 4 of Haiyang Nuclear Power Phase II project, the project has entered the installation and commissioning stage.

Li Jianwei, the commander-in-chief of the Haiyang Nuclear Power Phase II Project of State Power Investment Corporation, stated that all units 3 and 4 of Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant adopt domestically designed technology. After full operation in 2027, the annual power generation of the four units can reach 40 billion kilowatt hours, which can meet the electricity needs of half of the residents in Shandong Province. Not only the Haiyang nuclear power project, but currently, China has approved the construction of 57 nuclear power units, accounting for more than half of the global scale. The total installed capacity of nuclear power units in operation and under construction has reached 135 million kilowatts, ranking first in the world.

As an important energy source for promoting the green transformation of the economy and society, China's nuclear power accounts for less than 2% of the country's installed power capacity, contributing nearly 5% of the electricity generation. The proportion of nuclear power generation in Guangdong, Fujian, Liaoning, Hainan and other four provinces exceeds 15%, and nuclear power has become an important source of clean energy supply in the eastern coastal areas. Zhao Xueshun, Deputy Director of the Nuclear Power Department of the National Energy Administration: Currently, China has established a large-scale, comprehensive, high-level, and capable nuclear power industry supply chain system. The level of equipment localization has reached over 90%, making it one of the few countries in the world with a complete nuclear power industry system.
At the end of July 2026, China approved 8 new nuclear power units, which were also the first batch of nuclear power projects approved during the 15th Five Year Plan period. During the 15th Five Year Plan period, China's nuclear power construction will continue to adhere to the principle of active, safe, and orderly development, steadily promote the construction of the eastern coastal nuclear power belt, promote the comprehensive utilization of nuclear energy according to local conditions, and steadily increase the proportion of nuclear power in energy and electricity consumption.Editor/Gong Ziwei
