The Brazilian government announced on August 13, 2026 that it has initiated relevant procedures under the Economic Equivalence Act to counter the new tariff measures imposed by the US government on Brazilian products. The Brazilian government issued a statement on the same day stating that the unilateral tariff measures taken by the US are unreasonable and arbitrary. The Brazilian government has previously provided evidence to refute allegations of unfair trade practices in Brazil and will continue to defend its position.  

The Office of the United States Trade Representative announced on July 15, 2026 that it will impose a 25% tariff on some Brazilian products on top of the existing tariff starting from July 22. On July 23rd, the Office of the United States Trade Representative imposed new tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on dozens of countries and regions, including Brazil, citing so-called "forced labor" as a replacement for the soon to expire global import tariffs.

The Brazilian Congress will pass the Economic Equivalence Act in April 2025. According to the bill, when unilateral actions taken by other countries or economies have a negative impact on Brazil's international competitiveness, the Brazilian Foreign Trade Commission may take countermeasures such as restricting the import of goods and services.Editor/Min Jing
