Ain Suhena on the banks of the Suez Canal, a heat wave carrying the winds of the Red Sea. On August 17, 2026, a groundbreaking ceremony was held within the China Egypt Teda Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone. When the bulldozer lifted the first handful of sand, the first specialized energy storage system assembly factory in the Middle East and Africa officially broke ground - Sunshine Power took 7 months to turn a blueprint into this 50000 square meter construction site under its feet.

The investment amount of this factory is about 50 million US dollars, with a planned annual production capacity of 10 GWh after full production. It is expected to be officially put into operation in April 2027. From the official announcement of the cooperation framework by both parties in January 2026 to the current groundbreaking, the fast pace has caught the attention of the industry.

The key outcome of Egypt's industrial upgrading

Egyptian Minister of Industry Khalid Hashim, Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Mustafa Shihon, as well as several senior officials from the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Defense Production, were all present. Hashem bluntly stated on site that this project is an important milestone in Egypt's clean energy transformation - it needs to fill in the gaps in Egypt's domestic energy storage equipment manufacturing.

For a long time, the development of new energy in Egypt has been constrained by insufficient energy storage capacity, and the stability of the power grid and the ability to absorb new energy need to be improved. After the establishment of this factory, it will not only directly create over 100 job opportunities, but also simultaneously carry out local technology training and energy storage technology transfer, helping Egypt build its own new energy manufacturing supporting system.

The manufacturing hub radiating to the three major regions

Sunshine Power has a clear positioning for this factory: a core manufacturing hub for energy storage in the Middle East, Africa, and even Southern Europe.

Prioritizing the service of Egypt's domestic new energy projects is the top priority. Norwegian developer Scatec's Energy Valley large-scale solar energy storage integrated project in Minya will become the first key supporting object of this factory. According to the formal power purchase agreement signed between Scatec and Egyptian Transmission Company, this series of projects includes 1.95GW of photovoltaic and 3.9GWh of energy storage, with facilities located in Minya, Kina, and Alexandria. Local chemical plants will provide stable production capacity support for these projects.

At the same time, the logistics advantages of the Suez Canal cannot be ignored. After the factory is put into operation, the products can quickly radiate to overseas markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Southern Europe. The logistics cost reduction and delivery response speed brought by localized production will further enhance the competitiveness of Sunac Power in the regional market. Referring to Sunshine Power's energy storage plant in Poland with a capacity of 12.5 GWh for energy storage systems and synchronous production of inverters, Egypt's planned capacity of 10 GWh also has a competitive advantage in the region.

Further evolution of China's energy storage overseas model

Looking further ahead, behind this factory lies a new energy cooperation with a total scale of approximately 1.8 billion US dollars. In January 2026, the cooperation framework between Sunac and Scatec was officially announced, with Scatec leading the Energy Valley project with a nominal 1.7GW photovoltaic and 4GWh energy storage capacity. The foundation laying of this factory is the most substantial implementation link in this grand framework.

Industry analysis indicates that the project is currently an energy storage system assembly production line and does not involve battery cell production for the time being. The real test of Egypt's subsequent industrial upgrading lies in whether it can gradually increase the procurement ratio of local components and engineering solutions. The industrial driving effect of this factory will ultimately depend on three indicators: future capacity utilization rate, proportion of local supporting facilities, and export scale.keywords:New energy information network

However, regardless, a clear signal has been released: the logic of Chinese energy storage companies going global is undergoing profound changes. From exporting a single device in the past to a deep cooperation model of localized factory construction, technology output, and industrial collaboration, the Sunshine Power Egypt factory is a vivid example of this transformation. It is not just the birth of a factory, but also a microcosm of China's energy storage dominance in emerging markets worldwide.Editor/Yang Meiling
