On August 22, 2026, the Shenzhen International Foshan Gaoming Fuwan Wharf project officially started construction. As the first landing project of the Deep International Port Networking Action layout in the Greater Bay Area, this inland river terminal with a total investment of 1 billion yuan is adding a key functional puzzle to the Xijiang shipping network in Foshan.

Port industry collaboration accelerates construction progress

The project is adjacent to the high-quality main waterway of Xijiang, with outstanding navigation conditions and location advantages. It is planned to build two 3000 ton general berths, with a reserved 5000 ton berthing capacity in the structure and a supporting land area of 163 acres. The project is positioned as a regional public bulk cargo terminal, providing core services for steel, sand and gravel goods, as well as covering the transportation needs of bulk goods such as grain, powder, and ton bags. It is expected to be officially put into operation in 2027.

From the signing of the cooperation agreement to the official commencement of the project, the functional departments at the provincial, municipal, and district levels provided advanced services throughout the process, efficiently completing all pre procedures such as planning, land use, and environmental impact assessment. This achieved a two-way combination of Shenzhen speed and Foshan efficiency, becoming a typical example of regional optimization of the business environment.

Three dimensional transportation activates the potential of Xijiang shipping

As the largest trunk stream of the the Pearl River water system, the Xijiang River ranks second in the country in terms of shipping volume. It is the core waterway channel linking Foshan with the Xijiang River basin and connecting the Beibu Gulf and the ASEAN market. By 2025, the cargo throughput of ports in Gaoming District will reach 17.9216 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 11.99%. The container throughput will be 535300 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 8.51%, both of which have reached new highs in nearly a decade.

After the opening of Fuwan Port, it will further improve the regional port collection and distribution system, promote the transformation of bulk goods from traditional road transportation to intermodal transportation, and directly reduce the logistics costs of local manufacturing enterprises. The project will also collaborate with major transportation facilities such as Guangzhou New Airport and Guangzhou Zhanjiang Railway to build a new three-dimensional transportation pattern of airport, railway and port coordination. Relying on the port networking system and smart logistics park layout of Shenzhen International, it will promote the agglomeration of port related industries and help Gaoming build a regional modern logistics new highland.

With the completion and operation of Fuwan Port, the logistics shortcomings in western Foshan will be completely filled. This new terminal is not only a new pivot for the Xijiang shipping network, but also will inject sustained logistics momentum into Foshan's construction of a national comprehensive transportation hub city and integration into the world-class port cluster of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area.Editor/Cheng Liting
