New progress has been made in energy cooperation between China and Africa. At the headquarters of China Petrochemical, senior executives from Chinese and Algerian companies met to discuss and draft a memorandum of cooperation, promoting deeper cooperation in the bilateral oil and gas industry.

Signing of high-level meetings

On August 28, 2026, Hou Qijun, Chairman of China Petrochemical Group, met with Daudi, Chairman and CEO of Algeria National Petroleum Company, and his delegation at the group headquarters. Both sides have conducted in-depth exchanges on various sectors such as conventional and unconventional oil and gas exploration and development, engineering services, equipment manufacturing, etc., and fully exchanged development opinions. After the meeting, the two companies officially signed a memorandum of understanding on strategic cooperation, providing a framework for collaborative development in multiple fields in the future.

Deep foundation of cooperation

Sonatrach, the national oil company of Algeria, was established in 1963 and is headquartered in the Hydra district of Algiers. As a leading oil and gas enterprise in Africa, its business covers the entire industry chain of exploration, production, transportation, refining, and sales. The company has a long-standing relationship with Chinese energy companies. In 2025, it signed an Arzew refinery expansion contract with China Petrochemical, and also signed contracts for natural gas exploration and development, as well as oil and gas field services with China National Petroleum Corporation and Tongyuan Petroleum Corporation. The implementation of this memorandum continues the good cooperation momentum between both parties.
