Recently, in Siedlce, Poland, on a land that is about to be covered by battery containers, Greenvolt Power, a subsidiary of Greenvolt Group, officially launched the construction of a 600MW/2.4GWh battery energy storage system project. After completion, it will become the largest battery energy storage facility in Poland and one of the leading large-scale energy storage projects in Europe, with plans to enter commercial operation by the end of 2027. And the Chinese company BYD Energy Storage provides the core battery system for it.

Joining hands again to accumulate 4GWh of cooperation

This is another collaboration between BYD Energy Storage and Greenvolt Power. In March 2025, both parties have signed supply agreements for two projects in Poland, Turosn Koscielna and Nowa Wies Elcka, with a scale of 200MW/800MWh each. With the addition of the Siedlce project, the cumulative energy storage cooperation scale between the two parties in Poland has reached 4GWh. BYD Energy Storage will provide a battery system for the project, with an overall design consisting of 210 battery containers and 105 transformer containers equipped with power conversion systems, achieving efficient bidirectional energy scheduling between batteries and the grid.

Blade batteries significantly reduce costs and increase efficiency

The project will adopt BYD Haohan energy storage system under BYD Energy Storage, equipped with the world's largest 2710Ah energy storage dedicated blade battery, with a minimum unit capacity of 14.5MWh, achieving an equivalent 20 foot container capacity of 10MWh. The Haohan system significantly saves land and construction costs for the Siedlce project with fewer boxes and smaller footprint, and has outstanding engineering economic value in the context of increasingly scarce land resources in Poland. The implementation of the project is jointly promoted by P&Q and ONDE. P&Q is responsible for connecting the energy storage system to the 400 kV power grid operated by PSE, the Polish transmission system operator. ONDE undertakes the construction of substations and civil and electrical engineering, marking the deep cooperation between China's advanced energy storage system and Europe's local engineering capabilities. Capacity market locks in long-term returns

The project has secured long-term returns through the Polish capacity market mechanism, providing stable financial security for investment returns. The capacity market mechanism in Poland is a relatively mature market-oriented system for power ancillary services in Central and Eastern Europe. Energy storage facilities obtain fixed income by participating in capacity auctions, effectively reducing project investment risks. From a strategic layout perspective, the Siedlce project is a key component of Greenvolt's energy storage strategy. The company has reserved approximately 4.6GW of probability weighted BESS projects, of which approximately 2.4GW are located in Poland. The Turosn Koscielna project was put into operation in July 2026, and another Elk project is scheduled to start commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2026. After all three energy storage facilities are put into operation, they will provide a total of 1GW of power and 4GWh of energy storage capacity for the Polish power system.

In June 2026, the 22 member states of the European Union jointly committed to adding 45GW of energy storage capacity by 2028. Poland, as one of the largest electricity markets in Central and Eastern Europe, is entering an accelerated period of large-scale battery energy storage facility construction. The Siedlce project provides another benchmark case for Chinese energy storage companies to deeply cultivate the European market.Editor/Gao Xue
