The sea breeze during the National Day holiday swept over the reefs of Taishan Island, and the wind turbine blades slowly rotated. At the construction site of the country's first off grid megawatt scale island microgrid project, the builders are converting the sea breeze and sunshine into stable electricity for the future of the island. From the isolated islands along the southeast coast to the underground pipe galleries along the Yangtze River, and then to the ultra-high voltage converter stations in the northwest inland, a number of new major power grid projects continue to advance during the festival, weaving a new network for clean power transmission in China.

Island microgrids open up new scenarios for off grid power supply

Taishan Island, located in the southeastern waters of Fuding, Fujian, has long relied on mainland submarine cables for cross sea power supply, and its power supply stability is greatly affected by the marine environment. The off grid megawatt level island microgrid project being promoted this time is equipped with three 100 kW wind turbines and nearly 10000 square meters of photovoltaic power generation equipment. All clean electricity is connected to the energy storage system for scheduling and storage, and can generate 1.2 million kWh of green electricity throughout the year, fully covering the daily production and living electricity needs of the entire island.

After the project is put into operation, Taishan Island will completely achieve self-sufficiency in electricity, get rid of dependence on cross sea external power grids, and become the first megawatt level microgrid demonstration island in China to achieve stable off grid operation, providing a replicable landing sample for the upgrading of power supply in remote islands across the country.

Synchronized tackling of cross regional power transmission and underground pipe gallery

At the Yuezhou Converter Station, the hub of the ± 800 kV HVDC transmission project from Gansu to Zhejiang, the installation of the main equipment has been completed, and the commissioning work of various specialties is progressing in an orderly manner according to the nodes. After the completion of this east-west ultra-high voltage corridor, it can transport over 36 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity to Zhejiang every year, equivalent to replacing about 11 million tons of standard coal combustion, greatly increasing the scale of new energy export from the western region.

The Wuhu section of the largest diameter power pipe gallery under construction in China has exceeded 70% of the underwater shield tunneling mileage on the Yangtze River. The on-site construction team is seizing the construction window for stable water levels in autumn, and it is expected to achieve full line connection before the Spring Festival. This deeply buried power channel at the bottom of the river will add a highly reliable underground transmission artery to the core area of the Yangtze River Delta, completely solving the long-term pain points of insufficient capacity and limited expansion of cross river transmission channels.

From isolated islands to river bottoms and cross regional corridors, these uninterrupted power grid projects during holidays are transforming dispersed wind and solar resources into stable and reliable power supply, laying a solid micro skeleton for the formation of China's new power system.Editor/Cheng Liting
