Energy storage power stations around the world are rapidly expanding at a much faster pace than expected. The latest industry monitoring report released in October 2026 shows that after the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference, the energy storage installation targets of countries around the world have experienced explosive growth, and the actual deployment progress is even ahead of official commitments. The entire industry is entering a new stage of development where targets and production capacity are accelerating in both directions.

Global energy storage target scale nearly doubles in two years

After the closure of COP29, the cumulative energy storage installed capacity target set by 99 countries and the European Union for 2030 has reached 822GW, a direct increase of 190% from the pre peak target of 284GW. However, there is still a 45% gap from the 2030 total target of 1500GW in the Global Energy Storage and Grid Initiative jointly signed by 74 countries. The vast majority of the increase in global energy storage targets is contributed by China and the European Union, which together account for over 80% of the publicly announced energy storage targets of countries around the world, and are the core driving force behind the global industry goals.

China has raised its 2030 energy storage target by 330GW to 460GW in its 15th Five Year Plan, while the European Union officially achieved its first 200GW energy storage target covering the entire region in June 2026. Only six other countries, including India and Australia, have set a 2030 energy storage target exceeding 20GW. There are still 8 countries in the top 20 global photovoltaic markets that have not set national energy storage targets for 2030, including the United States, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. The lack of clear targets is reducing the certainty of industry investment and slowing down the pace of energy storage implementation in some markets.

The actual deployment speed far exceeds the official target progress

Over the past decade, the average annual cost of global battery energy storage has decreased by about 20%, directly driving the industry's actual installed capacity to continue to grow rapidly. By 2025, the global new energy storage installed capacity will reach 118GW, a year-on-year increase of 40%, of which 108GW will be added to battery energy storage. As of the end of 2025, the cumulative global energy storage installed capacity has reached 430GW. Based on the current annual rate of 118GW, the global cumulative energy storage capacity will reach 1020GW by 2030, which is 24% higher than the total existing targets of various countries. The actual implementation performance has significantly exceeded official commitments.

The expansion speed of battery energy storage far exceeds that of the previous wind and photovoltaic industry. It only took 4 years for the annual new installed capacity to climb from 10GW to 100GW. In the past 5 years, the annual new capacity has directly increased by about 17 times. It is expected to add 158GW of energy storage installed capacity for the whole year of 2026, a year-on-year increase of 46%. According to the current expansion pace, the annual increase in scale in the next four years only needs to be increased to 1.4 times the current level, in order to achieve a global cumulative installed capacity of 1200GW of battery energy storage by 2030, providing sufficient power regulation support for the implementation of the 35-by-35 global electrification initiative in 2035.
