The second cross-border railway between China and Mongolia, from Ganqimaodu to Gashun Suhaitu, constructed by a Chinese enterprise, will have its T-beams fully erected by October 16, 2026, laying a solid foundation for subsequent construction projects.
The Ganqimaodu Gashun Suhaitu Cross border Railway is the second cross-border railway built by China and Mongolia in nearly 70 years after the opening of the Erenhot Zamyn Uud Railway in 1956. It is known as a new link for infrastructure interconnection between China and Mongolia. This project is jointly promoted by the two countries based on the principle of unified design, separate construction, and one-time connectivity. The project departs from Ganqimaodu Port in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, passes through Gashunsu Port in Mongolia, and connects to Gashunsu Port in South Gobi Province, Mongolia.
Xu Min, the on-site person in charge of the China Railway Construction Bridge Bureau's China Mongolia Cross border Railway Project, introduced that the project will start construction in May 2025, with a total length of 9.91 kilometers, including 6.08 kilometers of cross-border bridge section. A total of 760 T-beams need to be erected, with a maximum weight of 149.5 tons per beam. The operation of large tonnage beams requires strict construction technology, safety control, and operational accuracy. At the same time, the construction route passes through the Gobi desert area, making the construction difficult. The project team overcame numerous difficulties and successfully completed all beam erection construction tasks with high standards and high quality.
The Ganqimaodu Gashun Suhaitu Cross border Railway is an important milestone in deepening strategic docking and practical cooperation between China and Mongolia. After the completion of the project, it is expected to undertake 30 million tons of cargo transportation every year, which will realize the connection between Ganquan Railway and Mongolia's southbound railway, help to further expand the scale of trade in related fields between the two countries, promote infrastructure connectivity and economic and trade exchanges along the line, drive the upgrading of cross-border logistics, industrial parks, border trade services and other forms of business, which is of great significance for promoting China Mongolia economic cooperation and high-quality joint construction of the the Belt and Road.
