On October 20, 2026, in Songyuan, Jilin, the construction site machinery roared in the cold wind. The world's largest integrated green hydrogen ammonia alcohol project, Qinghe No.1 Songyuan Project Phase II, has officially started construction. From wind and solar power generation to electrolysis of water for hydrogen production, and then to synthesis of green ammonia, the zero carbon industry chain on the land of Northeast China is moving from demonstration and verification to a new stage of commercial and large-scale development.

The world's largest project starts construction

The total investment of the second phase of the project is 10.828 billion yuan, and it is planned to construct a 1600 MW wind and solar power generation supporting energy storage project, as well as two sets of large-scale green flexible synthetic ammonia plants. The project adopts a self use and surplus electricity grid connection mode. After the completion of the second phase, it will produce 56000 tons of green hydrogen and 400000 tons of green ammonia annually. After adding the production capacity of the first and second phases, the total annual production capacity of green ammonia will reach 600000 tons, ranking first in the world in terms of scale. The project connects the complete industrial chain of hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, hydrogen based chemical industry, hydrogen energy equipment, and technological research and development, converts the abundant wind and solar energy in Jilin into green electricity, electrolyzes water to produce hydrogen, further synthesizes green ammonia, and turns fluctuating wind and solar energy into convenient storage and transportation of green industrial raw materials and clean energy.

Flexible synthesis of ammonia breaks the bottleneck

The biggest pain point of wind and solar power generation is instability, and the industry has long faced three major bottlenecks: mismatched volatility, difficulty in nearby consumption of green electricity, and the impact of electricity price fluctuations on revenue. Qinghuai-1 adopts a multi-stage flexible synthetic ammonia process and green power direct connection virtual power plant control technology. The system can intelligently switch between two modes based on wind and solar prediction and electricity price signals, prioritizing chemical production or selling excess electricity on the grid to maximize comprehensive benefits. The first and second phase pipeline networks are interconnected, with hydrogen, steam, and desalinated water serving as backup for each other, ensuring the continuous and stable operation of the production line. This independent solution makes large-scale stable production possible, no longer just in laboratories and small-scale demonstrations. Zero carbon industry chain formation

After the second phase is put into operation, the project can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.4 million tons per year, which is approximately equivalent to planting 70 million trees. Green ammonia can serve as both a raw material for green fertilizers and a zero carbon fuel for ocean shipping and high-temperature industries, making it an ideal clean energy source for many areas that are difficult to electrify. The advancement of Qinghuai-1 proves that China has mastered the complete set of technology for large-scale stable production, and this replicable integrated model can provide a Chinese solution for the global zero carbon transformation. From wind and solar resources to green hydrogen and green ammonia products, a self controlled zero carbon industry chain is emerging on the land of Northeast China, giving China the initiative in the global competition for hydrogen energy and zero carbon fuels.Editor/Gao Xue
