On October 21, 2026, at the on-site press conference of Astana Aviation Safety Week, the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan officially released a global aviation expansion blueprint, planning to expand the international route network to 160 destinations, with six core areas listed as priority layout directions. The construction of the Eurasian air hub in the Central Asian hinterland is ushering in a leap of magnitude.
Clear progress of route encryption in the core area
In the first phase of the expansion plan, the coverage of air routes to China will be expanded to 30 cities, and the coverage of air routes to India will be directly expanded to 10 cities. The two high growth markets of South Asia and East Asia will become the core focus of this expansion. The Indian market is separately listed as a key incremental track based on the super large travel demand, relatively close flight distance and continuous high consumption growth. Later, Kazakhstan will gradually increase the frequency of flights to and from India according to the monthly rhythm. The existing popular routes in Türkiye and Russia will also increase the delivery capacity of wide body aircraft synchronously, greatly improving the punctuality rate of flights and passenger capacity.

The new routes in the European direction will be steadily launched annually, with at least three new intercontinental destinations opened each year, gradually achieving full coverage of core hub cities in Western and Southern Europe. In order to cope with the increase in passenger flow brought about by the expansion of air routes, Kazakhstan has launched runway renovation and terminal expansion projects at seven major airports across the country. From January to September 2026, the national civil aviation passenger throughput has exceeded 12.7 million, a year-on-year increase of 18.7%. The upgrading pace of existing infrastructure fully matches the pace of air route expansion.
Preparations for intercontinental direct flights are progressing in an orderly manner
Previously, due to the delayed delivery of Astana Airlines' first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the opening time of the long planned direct flight route from Kazakhstan to the United States was correspondingly postponed. Currently, the relevant crew training, air traffic rights application, and ground support system construction work are still steadily progressing, and commercial operations can be launched as soon as the new aircraft is delivered. As the airline network continues to extend to 160 international destinations, Kazakhstan's position as the core air transit hub of the Eurasian continent will be further consolidated. It is expected that the total number of transit passengers will exceed 3.2 million in 2026, a significant increase of 27% compared to 2025. Keywords: Kazakhstan Airlines, Kazakhstan Transportation
