On October 26, 2026, the latest monthly data from the National Energy Administration was officially released, and the cumulative installed capacity of wind and solar power in China exceeded the integer threshold of 2 billion kilowatts, marking a new milestone in the development of China's wind and solar industry.

2 billion kilowatts of installed capacity officially landed

As of the end of September 2026, the cumulative installed capacity of wind and solar power in China has reached 2.01 billion kilowatts, which is another landmark achievement of China's new energy industry, following the historic surpassing of thermal power by the end of 2025. From January to September 2026, the newly installed capacity of wind and solar power will be about 170 million kilowatts, accounting for over 70% of the total newly installed power capacity in China during the same period. Wind and solar power has become the absolute mainstay of the country's newly installed power capacity.

Among them, the cumulative installed capacity of wind power is close to 700 million kilowatts, and the cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation has exceeded 1.3 billion kilowatts. As a single power source category, photovoltaic power generation has officially surpassed coal-fired power generation in August 2026, becoming the largest installed power source category in China. From a total installed capacity of less than 100 million kilowatts in 2010 to over 2 billion kilowatts by September 2026, the entire Chinese wind and solar industry has completed the development path of other countries in the world in 16 years.

The construction of the new power system continues to accelerate

Behind the rapidly growing installed capacity of wind and solar power, the national consumption guarantee capacity is keeping up. From January to September 2026, the total wind and photovoltaic power generation in China will exceed 1.9 trillion kilowatt hours, accounting for 24% of the total electricity consumption in society. Wind and solar power has been deeply integrated into various daily electricity scenarios. The average curtailment rate of wind and solar power in the country has been steadily controlled within 5%, and there has been no large-scale curtailment of wind and solar power caused by the rapid growth of installed capacity. The demand for a new type of energy storage cross provincial ultra-high voltage transmission channel will be released synchronously. From January to September 2026, the newly installed capacity of new energy storage in China will exceed 35 million kilowatts. The energy storage projects supporting the Shagehuang Wind and Power Base in the northwest and north regions will be centrally connected to the grid, and the cross regional and cross provincial ultra-high voltage transmission channels will continue to expand, directly transmitting green electricity from the west to the eastern power load center. The achievement of 2 billion kilowatts of wind and solar power installed capacity is not the end point of development, but a new starting point for China's power system to comprehensively transform towards new energy dominance.Editor/Cheng Liting
